2010 Republic Bank Holiday Classic (Boys) Participating Teams

Ballard – Coach Chris Renner’s Bruins finished 32-5 last season and was runner-up in the state championship game.  While the bruins graduated several key players they return the talent to be very competitive in the 7th Region wars.  6-3 Sr. DeVante Parker is a Division I basketball player but sometimes his accomplishments on the court are overshadowed by his prowess on the gridiron.  5-11 So. Lavonne Holland is expected to put up good numbers this season.  6-5 Fr. Kelan Martin and 5-11 Fr. Quentin Snider are multi-talented players who will be immediate contributors.  6-1 Sr. Danny Yackey, 5-9 Sr. Jordan Parrish, and 6-2 So. Cam Lewis are expected to log quality minutes.

 

Betsy Layne – Coach William Newsome Jr.’s Bobcats finished 20-7 last season and should compete for the 15th Region crown this season.  6-5 Sr. Nathan Martin and 6-3 Sr. Casey Adkins are expected to lead the Bobcats this season.  Other key returnees include 6-1 Sr. Derek Tackett and 6-1 Jr. Andrew Roberts.

 

Bowling Green – Coach DG Sherill’s Purples finished 28-4 last season and will be a strong contender for the 4th Region title this season.  6-7 Sr. Chane Behanan is one of the best if not the best player in the state and 6-2 Sr. Austin Disney who transferred from Greenwood is an excellent outside threat.  Other key returnees include 6-2 Sr. Tyson Halcomb, 6-0 Jr. Scooter Hollis, 5-9 Jr. Dareon Simmons, 6-1 Sr. Mike Geegan, and 5-9 Sr. Darius Clement.

 

Covington Catholic – Coach Mike Listerman’s Colonels finished 18-13 last season and will contend for the 9th Region championship this season.  6-7 Sr. Jake Thelen averaged 16 ppg last season.  6-7 Sr. Drew Baker and 6-5 Sr. Alex Connelly give the Colonels additional size.  5-11 Sr. Austin Hudepohl, 6-0 Jr. Connor Cleves, 5-11 Jr. Clint Massie, and 5-7 Sr. Connor Maschinot are also key returnees.

 

Covington Scott – Coach Brad Carr’s Eagles finished 18-10 last season and will be one of the better teams in the 10th Region again this season.  Coach Carr graduated a lot of size from last years’s team.  6-1 Sr. point guard Kellen Smith had an excellent season averaging 13.7 ppg and 7.8apg last season.  5-10 Sr. Cameron Haynes is a good outside shooter and 6-0 Sr. Nick Farris and 5-11 Sr. Ryan Stivers are expected to log quality minutes.

 

DeSales – Coach John Mingus’ Colts finished 16-12 last season and must replace four starters to prepare for the competitive 6th Region campaign.  6-1 Jr. Brandon Brooks, 5-9 Sr. Corbin Maynard, 6-0 Sr. Robbie Odle, 6-3 Sr. Jake Sliter, and 6-4 Sr. Sam Keehner are expected to be key contributors this season.

 

Elliott County – Coach Greg Adkins’ Lions finished 20-8 last season and should be a top contender for the 16th Region championship this season.  6-7 Sr. Timmy Knipp averaged 30.8 ppg last season and can score from anywhere on the floor.  5-9 Sr. Cody Nickell and 6-7 Sr. Jacob Ison are also key players in the Lions’ high scoring offense.

 

Fayette County GA – Coach Andre Flynn’s Tigers are one of the top 4A teams in the state and are experienced and talented.  6-1 Sr. Adam Smith is a versatile guard who can both score and dish the ball.  6-5 Sr. Larry Erves is an exciting wing player who attacks the rim.  6-5 Sr. Marcus Williams can put up good numbers and 5-10 Jr. Brandon Grant is a quick point guard who can get to the basket.6-9 Jr. Ekene Anachebe is a promising post player with size.  Coach Flynn has several players who could compete for quality minutes this season.

 

Henry Clay – Coach Daniel Brown’s Blue Devils finished 16-17 last season and should be very competitive in the 11th Region this season.  6-6 Sr. Daniel Kiesling averaged 11 ppg and 6 rpg last season and 5-8 Jr. Wes Kimball (8 ppg) is an excellent point guard.  Other key senior returnees include 6-2 Sr. Trae Stewart, 6-0 Sr. Kendrick Prewitt, and 6-0 Sr. Brandon Nichols.  Coach Brown could get immediate help from talented freshmen 6-5 Trey Grundy and 6-4 Jordan Green.

 

Knox Central – Coach Brian Evans’ Panthers finished 14-13 last season and should be one of the top teams in the 13th Region this season.  6-1 Jr. Tanner Broughton (11.3 ppg) is an excellent ballhandler who can get to the basket and 6-0 Sr. Travis Canady (12.6 ppg) is a versatile all around player.  5-10 Jr. Johnathan Barger, 6-6 So. Tobie Merida, and 6-1 Jr. Kyle Combs are also key returnees.

 

Lexington Catholic – Coach Brandon Salsman’s Knights finished 20-5 last season and should contend for the 11th Region crown this season.  The Knights suffered two unexpected losses when 6-0 Jr. guard Jaylen Beckham transferred to a prep school and 6-3 So. Larry Morton who set out last season after thransferring from Paul Dunbar decided to transfer to Bryan Station.  The cupboard is never bare at Lexington Catholic and they will be led by the “big three” 6-5 Sr. Taylor Martin (11 ppg). 6-4 Sr. Scott Schuette (12 ppg), and 6-0 Sr. Seth Beckham (10 ppg).  6-5 Jr. Craig Floyd and 5-10 Jr. Bryan Woomer are expected to be the other starters.  6-4 Sr. Hunter Porter and 5-11 Sr. William Talbott will also log quality minutes.  6-8 So. Jack Whitman has been slowed by a broken wrist but will contribute during the season.  Several other players will log minutes this season and have the potential to move into the rotation.

 

Louisville Central – Coach Doug Bibby’s Yellowjackets finished 13-16 last season and will be one of the better teams in the 6th Region this season.  5-10 Sr. Desmond Brown (16 ppg) and 6-0 Sr. Isaiah Jones (12 ppg) are expected to lead the Yellowjackets.  6-4 Sr. Marcel Williams set out last year with an injury but should provide an inside presence.  Other key returnees are 6-4 So. Stuart Jackson and 5-11 Sr. Dominique Chandler.  6-4 Fr. DeAngelo Russell has the potential to be a special player.

 

Mercer County – The Titans finished 22-10 last season and Brian Britt takes over as coach this season.  The Titans have the talent returning to contend for the 12th Region title.  The Titans have eight seniors returning led by 6-3 Sr. Clay Cinnamon who averaged 17 ppg last season.  Other key returnees include 5-10 Sr. Austin Sagraves and 6-3 Sr. Aaron Lee.

 

Oldham County – Coach Jason Holland’s Colonels finished 11-16 last season but should contend for the 8th Region championship this season.  6-2 Jr. Kerry Smith is an athletic slasher who can get to the rim.  6-2 Sr. Dylan Sims will add a strong inside game when he recovers from a foot injury.  6-6 Jr. Tyler Wesley and 6-5 Sr. Noland DeNise will provide added scoring punch.  6-1 Sr. Blake Payne, 5-10 Jr. Parker Simpson, and 6-1 Jr. Alante Flores are also expected to be in the rotation.

 

Paducah Tilghman – Coach Brad Stieg’s Blue Tornado finished 27-7 last season and are favored to repeat as 1st Region champions.  6-4 Sr. Josh Forrest averaged 14.9 ppg and 7.6 rpg last season and is a game changer on both offense and defense.  5-10 Sr. Trevonte Cole averaged 10.5 ppg and is an excellent shooter from beyond the arc.  6-3 Jr. JD Harmon averaged 10 ppg last season coming off the bench and is a versatile scorer.  Other players expected to contribute include 6-7 Sr. Devon Wilson, 6-1 Jr. Decardia Key, 6-4 Sr. Chaveon Harper, 5-10 Jr. Cody Schultz, and 6-4 Sr. Dujuan Edmonds.

 

Seneca – The Redhawks finished 19-10 last season and Matt Lemon takes over as head coach.  Seneca will be very competitive in the always tough 7th Region this season.  6-3 Sr. Martez Harris (16 ppg) and 6-2 Sr. Kevin Shaw (10 ppg) give the Redhawks a good scoring punch.  Other key returnees include 6-4 Sr. Michael Fluellen and 6-4 Sr. Walter Alexander.

 

Sheldon Clark – The Cardinals finished 15-13 last season and Kevin Spurlock takes over to lead them in the 15th Region battles.  6-2 Jr. BJ Moore scores points in bunches and the Cardinals have another capable scorer in 6-2 Sr. Tyler Lafferty.  Sheldon Clark has experience with several seniors on the roster.

 

University Heights Academy – Coach Randy McCoy’s Blazers finished 19-11 last season and is expected to be one of the better teams in the 2nd Region this season.  UHA will be led by 5-11 Sr. guard Matt McGowan who is an excellent perimeter shooter.  Other top players returning include 6-0 Sr. Nakeifer Blane, 6-5 Sr. Tiberius Smith, 6-0 Sr. Jalen Ladd, and 5-11 Jr. K’Quan McNease.

 

Warren Central – Coach Tim Riley’s Dragons finished 23-9 last season and should battle Bowling Green for the 4th Region crown this season.  They have two of the best players in the region and the state in 6-7 Sr. George Fant and 5-11 Sr. Jordan Shanklin.  The Dragons have a good supporting cast including 5-11 Sr. Cortez Barber, 6-0 Jr. Donovan Halsel, and 6-3 Sr. Adam Bradley.
