Basketball Camp
July 30-31, 2004
Berea College
Berea, Kentucky
© 2004 Ron Harrison
This is the second year for this camp at Berea College. Berea women’s coach Bunky Harkelroad directs one of the few free exposure camps in the country. This unique camp features the invited players being divided into teams playing a total of eight games—four on Friday and four on Saturday. Several defensive sets are utilized in the first half of each game with the second half defense being left up to the individual coach. Some of the defensive sets being utilized include full court man press, half court trap press, 2-2-1 press, half court man-to-man, half court 2-3 or 3-2 zone, and half court match-up zone. This allows the coaches the opportunity to see the players perform both offensively and defensively with various defensive sets.
* I have included a roster with the
players’ names, heights, class, school, state, and high school
coach. This info is for
entertainment purposes only as an indicator of the talent level of the
camp. I apologize for any errors
or omissions made as I hurriedly transcribed the info. Also, as in any camp or event, there
were the usual amount of no-shows.

Summary
There was some impressive talent at this camp, which afforded observers to view players from all sections of the state as well as some talented out-of-state performers. The players ranged from rising seniors to players entering the eighth grade this season. Eighth graders 6-0 Lori Fletcher (Wolfe County) and 5-7 Katy Cooke (Woodford County) continued their excellent play over the summer. Fletcher entered the spotlight as a seventh grader by averaging 17 ppg and 14 rpg as a varsity performer. Cooke also burst on the scene last year with an excellent varsity campaign including one memorable game in which she nailed eight three pointers.
5-10 Sr. Tara Rowe (Rockcastle County) continued her impressive summer play. Rowe can nail the outside jumper, but is strong enough to score in the paint. Don’t forget about 6-0 Sr. Katie Sanderson from Greenwood—she can play the game. 6-0 Sr. Maggie McKemie (Christian Academy of Louisville) sat out last season after transferring from DuPont Manual but she is playing better than ever and could be the missing piece of the puzzle for a very talented CAL team. Covington Holy Cross’s terrific trio of Brittany Bass, Rachel Lantry, and Amie Noll should lead Holy Cross to a high pre-season ranking.
Amber and Paige Guffey seem to have been on the scene forever but the talented twins will be entering their final campaigns at Clinton County this season. Several players from Lexington Catholic played this weekend and it is easy to see why many people consider the Lady Knights the pre-season number one team in the state. 6-0 Jr. Brittany Edelen (Washington County) displayed a nice touch on her mid-range jumper this week. Add this to her outstanding athleticism and Miss Edelen is difficult to defend. Rebecca Gray and Suzie Owens played well this week and are two of the main reasons Scott County will enter the season highly ranked.
I had the pleasure of watching 5-2 Jr. LaQuisha (French Fry) Warton (Iroquois) and 5-4 Jr. Nicole Holman (Butler) match up in one of the games. These young ladies are “quick on quick” and are worth the price of admission. 5-8 Sr. Madison Flowers (Somerset) always impresses and is capable of putting up impressive numbers. 5-11 Sr. Robyn Jennings (Elizabethtown) is a very talented inside player. 5-6 Jr. Taylor Christman (Paris) is a member of Coach Terrence Brooks three-point bombers and can shoot the trey with anyone. Rockcastle County should be favored to capture the Thirteenth Region crown this year but expect Clay County, led by 5-7 Jr. Jayme Gilbert to mount a challenge. Coach Mark Evans (Mercy Academy) had several players here and, while they suffered heavy graduation losses, Mercy will be good this year.
Although it is impossible to mention every player here, many were impressive and should have excellent 2004-2005 campaigns.
Conclusion
Congratulations to Coach Bunky Harkelroad for putting together this fine event on the beautiful campus at Berea College. This camp displayed some excellent talent and another very important aspect in the era of escalating costs—this camp was FREE to the players. I respect and applaud anyone who can and does put together an event for the players in which the only payment expected is effort and a love for the game.
Please feel free to send your comments and questions concerning the event, teams, or players to me at prephoops@yahoo.com .
