Jackson Rule

TITLE: Jackson Rule

AUTHOR: Dinah McCall

PUBLISHER: Harper Romance

PUBLISHING DATE: July 1996

FROM THE BACK COVER:

Jackson Rule had spent nearly half his life behind bars for murder. Now he was starting over---or trying to. Once he laid hungry eyes on his new employer, though, his resolve to lead a simple life, solitary life deseted him, replaced by yearnings for fierce, forbidden passion.

Preacher's daughter Rebecca Hill was raised to give folks the benefit of the doubt---though maybe this time she'd taken charity a bit too far. True, Jackson Rule had paid his debt to society, and was a hard, honest worker. What threatened to undo her was the sheer burning desire she felt in his presence, and the sinking feeling that her heart would be his captive forever.

REVIEW:

The relationship between Jackson and Rebecca is one of the most romantic stories I've ever read. As the story unfolds, we meet Jackson, Rebecca, her father, her employee and father's friend, Pete, and Jackson's sister, Molly. The sister has spent the last 15 years in a mental institution while Jackson has been imprisoned. When released, he finds a job working at Rebecca's nursery. Jackson eventually finds his life's calling volunteering at a homeless shelter and donating his time helping the childern there. This is a strong, moving story that will delight any reader who wants to "meet" a true romantic hero. Jackson is wonderful and so is Rebecca because she is the one who accepts Jackson for who he is. Her trust, friendship, and love is what heals the wounds within Jackson.

This book was poignant and beautiful and heart-wrenching. Ms. McCall balances the elements of the ravages of child abuse with the fear and beauty of healing without being maudlin or trite. She is extremely honest in her descriptions of the horrors of child abuse and its aftermath without being redundant. She does a excellent job of showing that healing is hard and scarey and often painful.

This book is a definite keeper!!
