THE ALL-TIME UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE FOOTBALL TEAM

This team is a result of fans who placed nominations on Red Rage from April 20-August 1, 2000.

Five honored jerseys. Ten All-American's. Five first-round NFL Draft picks. The school's all-time passing, receiving and interceptions leaders . A potential NCAA 1-A all-time leader for receptions.  Dominating performers regarded by Louisville football fans as the best to ever play the game in a Cardinals uniform.

Legend after legend after legend.

And a quick glance at the players who made the team reads like a "Who's Who" of the Louisville record books and pro football greats.  

Tom Jackson. Mark Clayton. Ted Washington. Lenny Lyles. Sam Madison. Joe Jacoby. Frank Minnifield. The list goes on and on, and they serve as the perfect reminder of the school's football history and recent development.

The most hotly-contested race was for the best-ever defensive lineman. Ted Washington and Joe Johnson remained nearly even throughout the voting period, flip-flopping twice.

When Redman left the University of Louisville he had set new school marks for career passing yards (12,541), single season passing yards (4,042), career total offense (12,129), single season total offense (4,009), single game passing yards (592), single game touchdown passes (6), 300-yard passing games (23), single season completion percentage (.653) and many more.  Following his senior season, Chris Redman was awarded the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which goes to the nation's top senior quarterback.

Even though the group of players who made the all-time team represents many of the greatest players to ever play football at the university, the list of players who didn't make the team stand as perhaps an even greater testament to the quality of players who have played for the Red and Black.

Pro Football Hall of Fame member Johnny Unitas and Ernie Green, who's jersey hangs from the facade of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, are both absent.  Other former Cardinal greats that failed to garner enough votes were Otis Wilson, Eddie Johnson, Ibn Green, Walter Peacock, Ralph Dawkins, Kendrick Gholston and Mike Flores. Wilson and Johnson are both in the program's top four in career tackles.  Green is second on the U of L career receptions list. Peacock is tops when it comes to career rushing yards at Louisville.  Dawkins is eighth in career rushing yards and fifth in career receptions.  Gohlston and Flores rank one and two for most career sacks. Of course there are others who many will feel that should have been included on the all-time team.
