Long Live the Corporation
Over the course of my tenure in the BWF, I have had the honor and privilege of being a member of
many factions. The original Four Horsemen (me, Ryan, Doug, Sean), D-Generation X (me, Doug, Sean,
Kris, Danny), the revamped Four Horsemen (me, Ryan, Danny, Kevin), and finally the Corporation (me,
Ryan, Danny). And I can say, without hyperbole, that I am most proud to be a member of the Corporation.
When Ryan approached me with the idea of the Corporation, a slimmed-down version of the Four
Horsemen, an elite, unstoppable group, I was excited from the first moment. And I’ll say now, I don’t think
the Corporation will ever fall.
Let’s run through the facts first. The three members of the Corporation are far and away the three
greatest superstars our federation has ever seen. Ryan Hale: World Champion for 22 solid months. 1/2 of
the tag-team champions. The federation’s only ever hard-core champion. Winner of two first blood
matches, the casket match, and winner of the first ever Royal Rumble. Slammy Award winner for Best
Wrestler, among others. Danny McLindon: Current World Champion. Former European Champion.
Winner of Royal Rumble 1999. Slammy Award winner. And myself, Brian Schaefer: Former World
Champion. Former Intercontinental Champion. Winner of the 1998 King of the Ring tournament. Winner
of the federation’s only Last Man Standing match. Slammy Award winner for Best Move, among others.
Pretty impressive stats. The corporation’s three members are the only three world champions the
federation has ever had. And let’s face it: the federation is now enjoying greater prosperity than it ever has,
but during the first two, formative years, the feud between Ryan and Brian (Slammy winner for Best Feud) is
probably the one thing that kept the federation alive when it was on the verge of falling apart. From the four
corners match at Wrestlemania 1 through the first blood match, the ladder match (Slammy winner for Best
Match), the ironman match, the last man standing match, the casket match, and others, Ryan and Brian
fought like only they could. No one else in the federation could have pulled off some of the things that we
did in those matches.
So how, you may ask, can Ryan and I co-exist if we hate each other so much? But you see, that’s
the thing people don’t understand. It’s just business. Ryan and I don’t hate each other. Our feud was good
for the federation, so we kept it going. “It’s just business” is the mantra of the Corporation. When Danny
turned on me at the Rumble and joined with Ryan to join the tag team belts, that was fine with me (after
getting over the initial shock, admittedly). As long as the belts are in the Corporation, we’re all happy. And
let me tell you something, once a belt is in the Corporation, it’s there to stay. Who’s going to take it away?
Doug? King of the Mid-Carders? Not likely. Ian? Kris? Eric?
So, when I face Danny at Saturday Night’s Main Event this month for the world title, it’s a win/win
situation for the Corporation. Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to try my damnedest to win, but if I lose,
well, that’s okay too, because the belt stays in the Corporation and the Corporation is bigger than all of us.
I can be secure in my matches because I know Danny and Ryan will be watching my back, and I
watch theirs when they’re in the squared circle. I’d rather have Ryan and Danny watching my back that an
entire squadron of Hell’s Angels.
Danny and I were tag partners for a long time and you learn a lot about a person when you’re in the
ring with them. There’s no one more deserving of the World title than Danny. If I don’t beat him for it,
Danny could very well hold that belt for a long time to come. And we wouldn’t all be here if it wasn’t for
Ryan and his incredible wrestling ability and love of the sport. And me, well, you all know how great I am.
And we three will rule this sport for years to come.
Long live the Corporation.
