Cage Cleaning

Step 1: Removing your gerbil...

A cage has to be gerbil free in order to be cleaned. So to do that you need to have a safe escape-proof cage for your gerbils. Your best bet is to use a shipping tank or other small cage. Also Gerbils often get bored in small cages like these so while you are cleaning out their big cage so make sure to throw a toliet paper roll in with them!

Step 2: Removing the cage accessories...

Once you have your gerbils out you have to remove everything thing else, like toys, the food dish, the water bottle, and cardboard items. Then you should make sure you wash every single toy, the food dish, and the water bottle with hot water because germs and smell can build up! DO NOT wash the cardboard items, they should just replace it with new cardboard. Make sure to use just hot water with NO SOAP in it to wash these! Dry throughly as well.

Step 3: Discharging beddings...

Once Step 1 and 2 are done just grab a trash can and start dumping all the dirty bedding in! Make sure you get it all because its gross when you have wet bedding during the next step! If some of the bedding sticks to the cage because it is wet the next step with take care of that! If you miss the trash can just vaccum it up.

Step 4: Washing out the cage...

Once all the bedding is gone take the cage either outside or to a stationary tub to wash it out. Wash it just like you washed the toys with hot water (NO SOAP!!) and a good drying!

Step 5: Putting in fresh bedding...

Next step is to replace the bedding. You can use any kind of bedding execpt CEDAR & PINE! I recommend aspen or carefresh. Just dump in a good amount (about a inch) to cover the bottom. If your gerbil is allergic to the type of bedding you use you may have to switch types or bedding. Just look for a bloody nose to tell if they are allergic! If they are you should switch beddings as soon as possible.

Step 6: Replacing everything...

Once you have finished washing the cage replace all the toys. As a tip I always make sure to put them in a different positions or put them in different cages than they were in before because it seems to entertain the gerbils longer! Put fresh food in the food dish and fresh water in the water bottle and place them back into the cage. If you like to add vitamins to either the food or water this is your chance to do so.

Step 7: Last Step- Checking the cage...

Make sure that the gerbils won't be able to escape the cage and you are finished!! Also don't forget to maybe reward your gerbil for being such a good sport and give them alittle treat! YEEEEPIEEE!!! Your done! Horray now go do something else (or in my case start on another cage =0( !!!!!
