Chapter 7- Cross'ed Paths

Two Months Later: End of July

News was flying around Orlando at the prospect of a pop star relationship between none other than Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. There was a formal party being held at one of the most exclusive hotels in the city for all Jive artists; old and new.

McKennah was being dragged to the party by Lynn and Jon, who had so adorably asked her to be his date.

She was standing in front of the full-length mirror critiquing(sp?) herself. She spun around and Lynn smiled, "You look beautiful McKennah."

She smiled, finally, "Thanks Lynn."

"And Jon will love the dress."

She laughed, "I can't believe the one time I actually get to go to a formal, my date is a five year old. My mom is going to roll SO hard."

Lynn put her hands on her shoulders, "She will."

"I know she will!"

"But you do look beautiful McKennah."

"Thank you...thank you for helping me find it!"

She smiled, "Of course!"

"What's Justin wearing?"

She shrugged, "Don't know. He said it was a suit."

"What's..Britney wearing?"

She again shrugged, "She could end up coming half-naked and I wouldn't be surprised."

"Lynn!"

She laughed, "I'm just kidding. That girl is nice and everything..but I still think it's awful of Justin to be going with her while you're stuck going with his little brother."

"Lynn..it's ok..really...I didn't figure he'd want to go with me.."

"Well I did...but the minute Ms. I can't wear a whole outfit without one hole in it showed up, he forgot about you. Tell me it didn't hurt just a smidgen?"

"Ok..It hurt my feelings..a little..it's not like I gave up a whole summer or anything to come on tour with him."

"And it's not like you gave up your life, practically, to come on tour and to live with him."

McKennah sat down on the bed, "I don't know what to do Lynn."

"About what honey?"

"Justin doesn't even have a clue..."

"That you like him?"

"Yes..and I hate to admit it.."

Lynn smiled, "I wondered when one of you would admit it.."

"You knew?!"

"Honey..a mother can tell.."

"Oh."

"Don't be all shy now and stuff, I'm fine with it..really..I think you two would make a very cute couple. It's not like you haven't done everything together or anything."

"True.."

"He'll get over Britney just as soon as she finds another guy to hang all over..plus, know what I heard from Johnny's wife?"

"What?"

"That her and Justin are just going as friends...she needed a date cause her real boyfriend couldn't make it...don't know whether it's true or not, but maybe it'll put some of the rumors to rest."

"Doubt it...man, why am I even going??"

"Because the guys insisted you go.."

"I'm not a singer and I'm definitely not a model...I just wish I could go home a sleep for a good week.."

Lynn smiled and turned as there was a knock at the door. She went to get it and JC stepped inside, a smile on his face, "Little J has requested McKennah's presence."

McKennah stood up, "Oh he did?"

"Ok..he just asked if I'd go get you."

"I guess I'll go.."

"You better, I'll be down to save you from Jon in a few minutes..," Lynn said hugging her briefly.

"Thanks Lynn."

"No problem."

JC and McKennah walked down the hallway to the elevators; Rodney in tow for JC's protection. "You look great McKennah."

"Thanks Jayce, so do you. Where's Christina?"

"She's going to be late but she said she'd make it."

"That's good."

He smiled as they stepped on, "I can't believe a five year old asked you."

Rodney laughed, "Me neither."

"Shut up! He was too cute to turn down!"

They all laughed as the elevator stopped and Jon stepped on, all decked out in a little suit. McKennah bent down and picked him up, "Hey my date!"

"Hi Kennah! You look pretty!"

"Why thank you Mister Jon, you don't look half bad youself. How many dances will we go for?"

He shrugged as he struggled to be let down, "I dunno..we'll have to start out slow and work our way up."

McKennah laughed, "Sounds good to me...I don't know how fast I can dance in these shoes."

The group stepped out into the foyer and walked towards the ballroom.

Justin made his way around the room, Britney in tow. He had yet to see his mom, brother, or McKennah; although he was trying to spot them. "Thank you soo much for agreeing to come with me Justin.," Britney said as they finally sat down at their table along with JC and his girlfriend, Christina, and Joey, Lance, and Chris.

"No problem.."

Britney leaned in and smiled as she watched Justin's eyes light up when he caught sight of McKennah and Jon dancing near their table. "But I have a feeling you wish you were here with someone else."

"Huh?! What?? Oh, um,no, why would you umm..think..that?"

"You've been looking for her all night J, like I haven't noticed."

"That obvious?"

"Yep."

"I'm sorry Britney."

She smiled, "It's okay, I understand completely. If Rob was here, I'd be the same way. I figured it'd just be easier if me and you went; although the whole press thing wasn't expected."

Justin rolled his eyes, "I can't believe they're still stuck on that rumor that we're dating."

She laughed, "I know! They can't like, get over it!"

He nodded, "I know...I wish they would too.."

"me too...she's pretty J."

"She's my best friend."

Britney smiled, "That's the girl you used to talk about all the time when we were on the show?"

He nodded, "Yep..she's living with me now."

"Really? That's so cute J."

"It's cute??"

She laughed, "Yep! Go over there..Although I think your little brother is giving you a run for your money.."

"He's five!"

She laughed again, "I know, I know. So go..now Justin. Before another reporter gets in here and tries to ask me if me and you are living together."

He stood up, "Thanks Britney."

"You're welcome..now go, before she gives me another death glare."

He smiled, "She's protective."

"I can see why. Bye Justin.," She said standing up as well, "I think I'll go bug Johnny."

"Bye Britney."

He walked over just as one song ended. Jon saw his brother and ran up to him, "McKennah's my date Justin!"

Justin picked him up, "I see that, are you treating her like a lady?"

Jon looked a little confused, "Duh! Justin! She's not a lady, she's McKennah!"

McKennah smiled, "Thanks little J..I think."

Jon grinned at her, "Doesn't she look pretty Justin?"

Justin finally took ALL of McKennah in as he turned to look at her. Her hair was down, curled just enough to give it bounce, her make-up was a little sparkly but other than that she had very minimal on. Her dress was long, fitted and silver; it brought all her curves out and Justin definitely took those in. He smiled as he looked her up, then down, and met her eyes. "You look beautiful McKennah."

She smiled, a little shy all of a sudden, "Thanks Justin..you're looking good tonight as well."

"Why thank you. And Jon, who picked out your suit?"

Jon smiled proudly at his mom, "Mommy!"

"Well she did a very, very good job."

"Where's Britney? Did she find another curly haired guy to dance with??"

"Kennah..."

"What?? I was just asking a simple question."

"Can we talk? Outside."

She nodded, "Lead the way Timberlake."

He walked through the crowd, he could hear McKennah's footsteps behind him. He walked out of two open doors, waited for her to come out as well, and shut them. They were now in a garden of sorts and he walked until he found a bench, away from the paparazzi and his peers from the record company. "Why are you so jealous all of a sudden??"

"Excuse me?!"

"Why are you so jealous that I came with Britney?!"

She put her hands on her hips definantly, "I am NOT jealous!"

"Why were you glaring at me and her earlier? And why did you get so snotty when you asked about her then?!"

"Just shut up Justin! You wouldn't understand!"

He walked up behind her, "Then make me understand."

"I can't Justin."

"Yes, you can McKennah. We're best friends...we used to be able to tell each other anything when we were younger."

She turned to look at him, "We're not 12 anymore Justin."

"Well I knew that."

"Justin...I can't talk to you about this..."

"Are you upset cause I didn't go with you?"

"It kinda made me mad that your five year old brother asked me to YOUR record company's party! You didn't even tell me about it!"

"I thought Christina told you!"

"Why would she tell me when I hang out with you more than her?!"

Justin threw his hands up in frustration, "I don't know why I didn't tell you! OKAY! I thought you knew McKennah! I had no idea you would EVER freak out this much over one little party! You hate to get dressed up! You hate these things! Why are you even here!!!?"

"I thought you wanted me here Justin. I thought because I'm one of your NORMAL friends who treats you like a NORMAL 19 year old that you would WANT ME here. I guess not. Goodbye Justin Timberlake.," She said before picking up her dress and leaving.

McKennah made her way back to the table, determined not to cry in front of these people who didn't want her there. She grabbed her purse and said goodbye to Lynn, "I'm heading home Lynn."

"But..your things are in my room."

"I'll send for them later...I've just..I have to get out of here."

She nodded, "Ok..do you want Rodney or someone to escort you??"

McKennah shook her head, "No..it looks like they'll have their hands full anyways..where's Jon?"

"Off dancing with Christina, I believe."

"Tell him I said thank you for a wonderful evening. He's going to be a cutie when he gets older."

"I will honey..be careful."

"I will..bye Lynn."

McKennah left then, not saying good-bye to anyone else. She was too afraid she'd run into Justin again. She exited out the front, undetected by the photographers that had lined the entrance since the party began. She walked down the street until she caught sight of a cab, hailed it and got in.
