Chapter 20- Endings

Justin held her hand as they walked down the beach, their feet bare, not a worry in their minds.

McKennah looked over at him and smiled, "I can't believe you did this.."

"Hey, I told you I'd plan it all...you didn't believe me."

She shrugged, "J..I know how you operate...you're very absentminded at times. But that's an endearing feature that you have."

He grinned, pulling her closer to him, "Why thank you."

She laughed as he began to tickle her and pulled out of his embrace, running down the beach.

He laughed and shoved his hands deeper into the pockets of his khaki pants.

Justin had arranged for them to be away for a week on a small island off the coast of Georgia. Just them, no one else. The island was about fifteen miles around and the people there didn't care if a teen celebrity and his girlfriend were there. It just meant more tourism for them for that week.

The sun was beginning to set as he caught up with McKennah at the steps of the beach house they had rented. He sat down behind her, and she settled in between his legs, his arms resting around her.

She sighed, "How long has it been since we've seen a sun set together?"

His forehead crinkled as he thought, "Ummmm..I don't know...it's been awhile though."

"Yeah..it has."

"I remember, when you were in the hospital, I watched the sun rise one morning on top of the roof...I kept thinking how we had done that so many times and then I thought..well, what if we never got to do it again? Then I thought, that's stupid to think like that..I'm supposed to be positive....not negative."

"You thought I'd die?"

"For about five seconds."

"Was it that bad?"

He nodded, "Yeah...they said you were in full cardiac arrest when they brought you in. That..night I got to see you after your mom arrived and you flat-lined..I thought I did something.."

"Justin..."

"I know, I know...but..just..seeing a sun set or a sunrise makes me realize how close I came to losing you...I don't think I'd of made it if you hadn't.."

She smiled a little, leaning back against him, "That's so sweet.."

"yeah, well, I'm a sweet kind of guy.."

McKennah laughed, "You are so full of it!"

He laughed, placing a kiss on top of her head, "That's why you love me Kennah..."

"Well..that is part of it."

They both drifted into companiable silence as the sun began it's descent into the horizon.

It not only symbolized a day ending, but a new one dawning.
