AJ looked up at the clock and groaned, "Dude, Kev, she's gonna be pissed."
"You wanted a good song, here ya go. It takes time."
"It's almost midnight."
"She'll understand once you show her all this...now are you sure AJ?"
"Positive man."
Kevin smiled, handing AJ the cd, "Ok...'bout damn time you became serious."
"I've been serious about her all along."
"I know you have...she's changed you, but I believe it's for the good of you."
AJ nodded, "I believe she's been awfully good for me."
"Well get on goin' home. Call me later and let me know how everything went, ok?"
"I will..tell Kristen thanks for fixing food and for letting me steal you away for a couple hours."
"She understands. Now go!"
AJ groaned again before grinning, "Yes dad."
AJ arrived at his house a little bit after midnight. He made sure he had the cd in his hands and went up to the dark house. No lights were anywhere, he flipped on the one in the kitchen and looked around. Madalyn wasn't down there so he went upstairs. Curled up in the middle of his bed was Madalyn. She was dressed in her pajamas but sound asleep. AJ crawled on the bed till he reached her, "Baby....come on, wake up."
She rolled over and opened one eye, "You're late."
He sighed, "I know, I'm sorry. Me and Kev ran over a little bit..come on, I wanna give you a surprise. To kinda make up for not having our night."
He managed to pull her from the bed. She yawned, "You're still not off the hook mister."
"I know..hopefully, this'll help."
He popped in the cd and pressed 'play'. AJ suddenly got nervous and began to wring his hands together. Madalyn was in the middle of a yawn when the words to the song finally started and she froze. "How'd you know that was my favorite song?"
"Trevor, when you two were together. He said he played it for you and you just fell in love with it. So me and Kev re-did it...."
She smiled, "AJ... you didn't have to do this for me."
"Yeah I did..I haven't really gotten you anything...so, here I go."
"This is so sweet..."
AJ pressed a kiss to her forehead, "I love you Madalyn."
"I love you too AJ..thank you."
The next day after Colin got home, they decided to take him to the park for a picnic. AJ and Madalyn walked along the sidewalk, hand-in-hand, while Colin ran ahead to the playground. "This was a good idea.."
"Yeah..this is fun."
"When are you all leaving again?"
He scratched his head underneath his ballcap, "Ummm...not for awhile, I guess."
"Ohhh.."
"Cause of the baby and all.."
"We'll have to get them something."
"Yeah..you ever think of having another?"
"Kid?"
"Yeah.."
"Sometimes. I'd love to have a little girl."
AJ grinned, "Colin would love a sister."
"Why? You thinkin' of having kids one day?"
"I've thought about it..sure....Colin almost seems like my own, ya know?"
"Yeah..I do. He adores you AJ...know what he told me the other night?"
"What?"
"That he wanted to do you job so he'd see you more."
AJ smiled, "I can just seem him like ten years from now on stage at the O Arena with all the screaming girls...and they'll be going 'Backstreet who?'"
Madalyn laughed, "Lord..he wouldn't know what to do with himself if girls were all over him.."
"Yeah he would, Mack it up!"
"Don't be a bad influence on my child AJ."
"I'll try my hardest."
"So..if you're thinking of having kids McLean, does that mean you're thinking of marraige?"
"It's crossed my mind."
"Really?"
"Yeah..I see how happy Brian and Kevin are in their marraiges..I'd love something like that."
She leaned her head on his shoulder, "I'd love to get married."
"Well..let's get married."
She was quiet for a moment before her head shot up off his shoulder, "Ummm..WHAT?!"
"We both want more kids, we both want to get married and we both love each other sooooo..let's do it."
"Are you serious??"
He smiled, "Yeah...this wasn't the way I wanted it to come out...but, I am the spontaneous one soooooo...I figured, why the hell not?"
"AJ!"
"We don't have to like tomorrow or anything...but I'd love to be able to call you my wife one of these days Madalyn."
"You're serious?"
"Yes, damnit."
"Whoa....that was SO not what I was expecting.."
He smiled, "Told you I was the spontaneous one."
"That you are. Ok AJ..."
"That's a yes?"
She nodded, "Yes..I'll marry you."
AJ jumped up off the bench and looked as if he didn't know whether to jump for joy or run around in circles crying. "We're gonna get married!"
She laughed, "Yes AJ...you did ask, remember?"
He pulled her up, "I can't wait until I can say 'I have to get home to my wife..'"
She leaned up and kissed him, "Me neither..only...the other way around."
"I love you."
"Love you too."
Colin ran up to them, "Mommy, will you come play with me?"
"Sure baby...me and AJ need to talk to you real quick though..come here."
She sat down and pulled Colin onto her lap. "What would you say Colin, if me and your mom were to get married?"
"Like my mommy and daddy were supposed to?," Colin asked looking at AJ.
"Yeah..but this time, it'd really happen."
"Would you be my daddy then?"
"Yeah.."
"Then I'd like it."
"Well...me and AJ are going to get married Colin..not right away or anything..."
"That'd be cool."
"So we have your permission, little man?," AJ asked.
Colin was silent and then nodded, "Yep! Now, can we go play??"
The two adults tried not to laugh but let Colin pull them from the bench and towards the playground. It was beginning to look as if they were really and truely a real family.
