Chapter 5

Isabel spent the next couple of days at Kevin's house on pins and needles. David had said he'd put a rush on the DNA test but so far he hadn't called. She hadn't contacted Nick either, she didn't know what to say to him in the first place. Brian had called once and said Nick was pretty upset and refused to leave the house.

She sighed and got up off the couch and found Kristen in the kitchen fixing Matthew some lunch. "Hey, you want anything?"

"No thanks..."

"Okay...are you alright Isabel?"

"I'll be fine once that test comes back.."

"You look kinda tired, maybe you should lay down?"

Isabel shook her head and sighed again, "I should but I can't go to sleep..too much is going through my mind."

"I know this has been rough on you..it was as much a surprise to me as it was to you...I mean, I don't believe it cause Nick wouldn't do that without being very, very careful."

"I know that...but that little shred of doubt caused me to leave him...he was actually crying Kris; I've never seen him cry..okay, I have once, but that was because I kicked him by accident..somewhere."

Kristen crinkled her nose, "Ouch.."

Isabel laughed, "I thought he was literally going to kill me too! He told me I ruined all chances of him having..children."

"So...about this whole kid thing..are you sure?"

Isabel nodded, "I'm absolutely sure I want to have kids with him....although, it will be scary to see him as a father...he can be a dimwit sometimes."

"Duh. But thats Nick..and he's not stupid..just kinda..absentminded."

"Yeah..definitely."

"When does he go back on tour?"

Isabel shrugged, "I don't know..can't remember actually."

The phone rang shrilly and both women jumped. Kristen answered, "Hello? Oh yes, she's right here, hold on a second."

Kristen put her hand over the mouthpeice, "It's David."

Isabel nodded and took the phone before going back into the living room, "Hello?"

"Isabel? It's David, how are you doing?"

"I'm worn out..you?"

"I'm okay, a bunch of work is piling up but that's okay, keeps me off the streets. I got some information for ya."

"Is it good or bad?"

"Good for you, bad for Jennifer."

"You mean?"

"Right. It is 99.999 percent sure that Nick is not the father of Jacob."

Isabel let out a relieved breath, "Oh thank you so much David."

"The papers are being faxed to Kevin's house now and that is your proof."

"Thank you so very much David, you don't know what this means to us."

"It was no problem at all Isabel. I've got the papers already drawn up to get her with assault and false accusations."

"Good.."

"I'll let you go, go to him Isabel."

"I'm about to leave as soon as I get the papers."

"I'm sure I'll talk to one of you all later.."

"Alright, and thank you again David."

"You're welcome Isabel, bye."

"Bye David."

She hung up and let out an excited squeal, which had Kristen running in from the kitchen, "What'd he say?!"

"Nick's not the father!"

Kristen let out a squeal as well and hugged Isabel, "Oh that's so great Isabel!"

"Where's the fax machine at?"

"In Kev's office, why?"

"David faxed the papers over..I gotta get home to Nick!"

Isabel walked up the front walkway, her bag slung over her shoulders, as she stopped and looked up at the house that loomed in front of her. She unlocked the door and stepped inside, everything was dark.

No light came from any place as she looked around. She dropped the bag and closed the door behind her and walked further into the house. A dog whimpered from the living room somewhere. "Mikey? Willy? Come here guys."

Two sets of small feet came pounding out and jumped at her feet. "Hey guys..where's Nicky at, huh?"

They, of course, didn't answer and suddenly scrambled away. Isabel stood up and brushed her hands on her jeans. She looked towards the back door and saw a torch lit out on the deck. She unlocked and opened that door and stepped out. Another torch was lit on her left and she looked around for any sign of Nick. She walked over to the railing and looked down at the darkened beach, she could hear the waves crashing and breaking as the tide came in. She finally spotted him, sitting on the sand, his legs pulled up to his chest as close as he could get them. He looked miserable. His shoulders were slumped, his hair mussed by the gently wind blowing.

Isabel mustered up all the courage she had and walked down the stairs and onto the soft sand. The papers were clutched in her right hand and she crinkled them a little as she made her way over to him; it was time to swallow her pride and hope he'd forgive her easily.

"Nicky?"

He didn't move but mumbled, "What do you want Kristen?"

"I'm not Kristen..and I would definitely NOT marry Kevin..eww, that'd be like a brother or something."

Nick jumped and looked at her from his spot on the ground. Her hair was blowing gently, and she looked about a miserable as he felt. "Isabel?"

She nodded, "Yeah.."

"You came home.."

"Of course I did.."

He crawled over to her and wrapped his arms around her legs, his head on her stomach, and began crying like a baby. "I'm so sorry Isabel..I'm so so so sorry baby..please don't leave me..please don't leave again."

She looked down at the shell of a man that was at her feet and her heart broke; he was begging and pleading her not to leave him again. She ran a hand through his hair, "I'm sorry too Nicky..and I won't leave, I promise."

She knelt down until she could hold him and he wrapped his arms tightly around her, "I need you so much Isabel..I love you so much, I need you...please don't leave.."

"I'm not going anywhere Nicky..I won't leave you, I promise."

His sobbing got deeper and he was shaking he was crying so hard. Isabel kissed the top of his head gently, "Honey, I promise I won't leave you again. I need you and love you so much Nicky..."

"You mean that?"

"Of course I mean it Nicky.."

He looked at her, his blue eyes bloodshot and puffy. "I missed you."

She leaned over and kissed him softly, "I missed you too Nicky..and I love you so much."

"I wish you hadn't found out like that.."

"Me too Nicky..but I've got some good news.."

"You do?"

She nodded and showed him the papers, "You are definitely not the father.."

He looked at the papers and touched them as if they were gold, "Oh my God. How'd you...?"

"I went over to Jennifer's house and we had a few words. I met the boy, his name is Jacob and he's four. He has red hair and brown eyes. He's adorable and so cute. But he doesn't look like you, the resembelance is ALMOST there but not quite. I knew the minute I set eyes on the boy that he was not yours."

"Did..she do anything?"

"Hell no she didn't. I was at least two feet taller than her; she's all bark and no bite Nicky."

"So it's over?"

"Yep."

"But she's going to tell the papers if I don't give her any money...."

"David's drawing up the papers to sue her for assault and false accusations."

"Really?"

"Really."

He smiled, the first real smile in days and kissed her, "I love you."

"I love you too...and I'm so sorry I didn't believe you for that split second. I was miserable at Kev's, sleeping all alone."

"Like it was any better here."

She smiled wryly, "I'm so sorry Nicky."

He brushed her hair back and kissed her, "Don't be. I should of told you."

"But I promised you that time to figure it out yourself."

"I don't care..I love you and need you so much Isabel."

She looked into his dark blue eyes and smiled, "I know Nicky.."

"You know..calling me that is a REAL turn-on.."

"Oh, really?"

He grinned and began kissing his way across her jawline and then down her neck. Isabel laughed but let him continue his way..

Isabel laughed as Nick threw her on their bed before covering both of them with the blanket, "I love you Isabel."

"I know..and I love you too."

He laid down next to her and wrapped and arm around her and held one of her hands. She smiled and ran her hand through his hair until he was asleep and breathing deeply. "I love you so much Nicky..."

He mumbled something and moved even closer to her if it was possible. "Nicky?"

"Mmmm?"

"We're having a baby Nicky..you and me."
