Trail of Tears

This is the land I've known and loved.
And these are my friends so dear.
My family, slain in battles past,
Have left me lonely here.

And now I find that I must leave
The only life I've known.
Pack up my things and move along
Like seeds the winds have blown.

Further and further we travel on
Beyond our promised goal
And further and further my memories stray
On this trail of death we stroll.

Our children will never know our ways
Our history has all but vanished.
And from the land we knew and loved
We are forever banished.

New families will reside there now
New memories will be sewn.
And all that's left for us to claim
Is this Trail of Tears, our own.

May God forgive the white man
And may God relieve our pain
May mercy be shown to those of us
Who on this trail remain.
