Three-toed Box Turtle - Terrapene carolina

The Three-toed box turtle can be found throughout much of the eastern United States and into Mexico. It generally has three hind toes, hence it's name. There are many subspecies and color variations found in this species. This turtle, like the other box turtles, is able to retreat into its shell completely. They have a hinged plastron that closes to protect them from predators. The Three-toed box turtle can grow up to 20cm in length. These specimens died naturally in the wild.
