"Sepsis has been defined as a clinical syndrome of serious bacterial infection including bacteremia with a concurrent deleterious systemic response.  This systemic response includes fever or hypothermia, leukocytosis or leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and various organ dysfunctions."
