Death of the Oldest New Jersey Representative
Mrs Mary Caroline Schuyler the oldest representative of the Schuyler family in this country, died early on Saturday mornng at the Schuyler homestead, near Arlington NJ, where she had lived with her only son, Henry Kingsland Schuyler.. She was the widow of Arent Henry Schuyler, who died in 1878, shortly after celebrating the 50th anniversary of their marriage, which occurred on 25 April 1828.. Mrs Schuyler was a daughter of Judge Henry W Kingsland, of Bergen county, and grand-daughter of Edmund William Kingsland..
She had 11 children, three of whome are living.. They are Henry Kingsland Schuyler, Mrs Anthony P Valentine, and Mrs Van Courtland Van Renselaer.. Her husband's father was a descendant of Phillip Pieterste Schuyler, who came from Holland in 1650 and settled in Albany NY.. Arent Henry Schuyler was born on the Schuyler estate where he died.. His grand-father, Arent, settled in Pompton NJ, in 1697, and moved from there to the present Schuyler tract in 1710, where the famous Schuyler copper mines were subsequently discovered by a negro slave.. Mrs Schuyler retained her faculties almost to the last, and was a remarkably bright woman.. She regularly attended Christ Church in Belleville, and had many friends in this city..
