Stonehenge

My jaw dropped when I saw just how big these stones are! What an amazing sight! Even though there are many speculations on why the stones were put there I believe it must have been for a religious reason. What other motivation would be so great that would cause people to gather stones from 20-240 miles away weighing 25 tons and set them into a circle? Some say the stones were set and used as some sort of calendar. Thats a lot of work for one darn calendar!

There are 2 different kinds of stone. Bluestone, which originally there were 60 stones and Sarsen, a natural sandstone consisting of 30 upright stones each weighing 25 tons, 30 lintels weiging 7 tons each and 10 huge uprights weighing 45 tons each.

Close -Up

It is figured that Stonehenge was first erected in 3000BC and comprised a ditch, bank holes and 2 entrances.
The second phase lasted 3 centuries between 2900BC and 2600BC where timber settings were added. The final phase began in 2600BC in which the bluestone were set. This comprised the outer land around Stonehenge

2-3 hundred years later the Sarsen stones were added. At this time the bluestone was reset within the circle.

Small people or BIG ROCKS?

Many artifacts have been found at the site; human bones, arrowheads, daggers, pottery, and more recent leavings such as; an old coke bottle, snack wrappers and baby bottles. Stonehenge is now roped off to keep litter to a minimum and to keep people from chipping away at the stones. Hopefully Stonehenge will be around for many years to come for us to enjoy!
