 Introduction

Do you like chocolate?  Do you want a good excuse to taste more of it -- in the classroom?!  This Web Quest will take you through the chocolate making process to the finished product.  Learn where chocolate begins, how it is made, and finish off with a taste test that compares different types of chocolate.  Graph your class's favorite types of chocolate and create an advertising campaign for your favorite chocolate candy; all these using adjectives!

 Learners

This lesson is ideal for eighth grade students that are taking the course of Grammar/Adjectives in the grade mentioned.  It is also an ideal way to asses following instructions and all the writing skills.

Students will need to know the basic skills of how to navigate on the Internet and the basic knowledge of grammar, specially adjectives.

Objectives

At the end of this activity, students will be able to:

·         Label a map with the locations of the tropical jungles where the cacao bean is grown.

·         Describe, using correct grammar, the places where cacao is grown.

·         Create a graph that shows the favorite types of chocolate of the class by using adjectives.

·         Identify the process of chocolate making.

·         Brainstorm adjectives that describe their chocolate candy to create a slide that advertises that candy.

·         Integrate technology into the other content areas of this lesson by using the Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Tasks and Process

You have a week to complete all the tasks and activities in this Web quest.  In this week, you have to follow instructions given in the student’s guide sheet and in this Quest.

TASKS

You will visit a variety of websites that show where the cacao bean is grown, how it is harvested and how it eventually becomes chocolate, as we know it.  You will also take part in a taste test that compares dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate.  The Web Quest will be completed with a graph of the class's favorite chocolates (to be done in Excel) and a slide presentation (completed in PowerPoint) of advertising campaigns for different types of chocolate candy tasted by pairs of students.

Don’t forget to use as many adjectives as you can!!!!

PROCESS

Working cooperatively with an assigned partner, Ss will:

1) Read the entire WebQuest, to ensure complete understanding of how to accomplish the assignment, and how they will be evaluated.

2) Decide what type of chocolate they will bring to class. One person will research information on the type of  chocolate chosen, while the other studies the places where cacao is grown.
3) Use the given links to find information.
4) Keep neat, detailed notes. Ss must include the name of the resource (website, book, etc.) where each piece of information was taken from.
5) Share their notes and information with their partner.
6) Make a survey to all students to find out which are the favorites.  Then, use Microsoft Excel to create a graph to show their results.
7) Create a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class their findings and the description of their chocolate as an advertisement.

Students will need to use the links below as well as their textbook to gather the information about the organ/system chosen.
