Facility Design is now in its second edition, ensuring that the material has been tested and revised for clarity and accuracy. In addition, this thoroughly updated new edition includes:
The text is designed to be used with a senior "capstone design course". (The
teacher's manual has detailed week by week assignments.) The class is divided
into teams (typically 4-5 students); each team spends the semester designing a
factory.
The emphasis is on engineering design. The students must design the building
and grounds, the layout of the building, material handling, and services and
environment.
Many topics are covered that are not covered in the normal industrial
engineering curriculum. See the detailed outline for coverage. Some examples
are:
- Facility location
- Building details (e.g. floors, roofs, fire protection, parking)
- Aisle design
- Security
- Specialized areas (e.g. toilets, welding, food service, clean rooms)
- Utility networks (e.g. electricity, compressed air, water, communication systems)
- Energy minimization
- Waste management
The text is organized so students can find the information they desire. This is
due to the numbering system within chapters as well as an extensive index.
The text is easy to read with a two-column (newspaper) format as opposed to the
typical single-column (textbook) format.
The price is $60.
Facility Design: Manufacturing Engineering 2nd Edition was released August 1994.
