STRANGLE & CHOKE TECHNIQUES (SHIME WAZA)

KOSHI JIME

This is an interesting strangle technique done by a standing player on a kneeling opponent.

The victim has attempted to pull off a Seoi Otoshi (Shoulder Drop throw) and landed in front of you on both knees with his back to you. Keeping your hands where they are on Uke's collar, and step round quickly to his right side. Keeping one hand under uke's throat, and the other on the back of their neck, pull them up towards yourself, but block this movement by putting your upper thigh and hip in the way.
This acts as a remarkably effective technique, and if done correctly, you will have them tapping for submission in no time, often before you realise the technique is on!

OKURI ERI JIME

Sensei Jason's favourite technique.
You are behind your opponent. Usually on the ground, kneeling behind the opponent. One hand snakes under Uke's left armpit, and grips his/her right lapel. Your right hand goes round the right side of the neck, and stays close to the throat, coming back round the left side, and you want to get your fingers back up to their left ear, thumb inside the collar, before gripping.
Both arms pull in opposite directions, effectively scissoring the person's neck with their own clothing.
