Barge Of The Dead ****

Wow! All I can say is wow! This episode was a prime example of the true talents that the Star Trek franchise has. Voyager's "The Last Gasp of Star Trek" my butt! This is the only quality TV show left. Voyager is awesome!! But enough of my Star Trek pride speech, I LOVED this episode! What could possibly be more enjoyble than a bunch of Klingon's running amuck on a barge in hell with B'Ellanne having a personality crisis?! The best you can get, that's what it is! Let me tell you, the writters on Voyager may have more faults that California, but they sure know how to develop a character.

Oh gosh.. where to start, hummm? Well first of all, the only minuet problem had to do with the 'near death experience' storyline. Not because it was a journey that brought B'Ellana a much needed dose of faith but because it had already been done with Neelix. Sure, the entire idea was different, still they both experiences had life changing impacts on their lifes. Only, B'Elanna's turned out a whole lot better!

Now for all of the reasons I did like it, and there are many! The main reason I enjoyed the episode was the fact that delt with B'Elanna's relationship with the Captain. For years the audience has seen these two characters thrown on a roller coaster ride of emotions. A love hate relationship. In this episode we were finally alowed to see the true reason why B'Elanna has been such a spit-fire whenever she's around the Captain, it's because the Captain reminds her of her mother. I thought that it was interesting when B'Elanna was in her 'own reality' and imagined the Captain calling her Lanna, it was strong hint that B'Elanna thinks of the Captain as a mother figure. The real moment of understanding came when B'Elanna came to the Captain to ask permision for her return to death. I finally understood why B'Elanna is always so pig-headed around Janeway, it's because she desperatly wants Janeway to be proud of her, but the Captain never recognizes the acomplishments that B'Elanna has worked so hard to achieve. I don't know about you, but that was a moment of pure clarity for me. I mean, if B'Elanna had just said to Janeway, "hey, could you pat me on the back once in a while," it would have saved a lot of wasted time on foolish arguments between two women that I would have liked to have seen become firends a long time ago. My favorite moment came, of course, at the end when B'Elanna hugged the Captain. The moment was sweet and endearing, something that I've missed seeing between the Captain and Kes. Maybe now we'll start to see a friendship begin to grow between B'Elanna and Janeway.

The other element of this episode that I enjoyed was the very interesting way that they portrayed the very heart of B'Elanna's emotions through symbols and metaphors. I found B'Elanna's usual refusal of her Klingon roots suprisingly enjoyable. The most enjoyable part however, was her sudden intrest in Klingon religion and history. The way the episode was set up, B'Elanna found herself embracing her heritage without a single whimper. She almost looked as if she enjoyed the trip into Klingon traditions and beliefs. What I supported the most was the immprotance of heritage and religion in this episode. I think that these are two very immportant things that B'Elanna has lacked but needed all of those years of inner conflict. Hopefully the writters will continue to explore her search into her Klingon blood.

The entire episode was well written and directed. It was a smooth running episode that was clear and understandable. The transitions between death and life were flawless and the scenery was breathtaking. There is just too many good things I have to say about this episode. What I also enjoyed was the dipiction of Klingon Hell. I liked their artistic veiw of what Hell would be like, not a fiery hole of torture, but more of a feeling or an atmosphere that causes exteam pain. I think their ideas were right, the fact that hell is unimaginable. I must say, however, the episode did make me a bit curiouse as to what Klingon Heaven, Kovastor(sp.), looks like.

All in all this was one of my favorite episodes, it was deffinatly enjoyable and so I give it 4 stars my highest rating. It had everything going for it, great writting, directing and most of all acting. Roxann Dawson (B'Ellanna) did an awesome job. Now all we want is a really good Tom and B'Ellanna episode and we'll be happy:)

Next week: The Doctor is horny, for Seven, B'Elanna and the Captain?!!! (I'm scared!)
