Weakerthans, bassist part ways

WINNIPEG indie rock band The Weakerthans has parted ways with one of its founding members, John Sutton

"Bass player John Sutton is no longer a member of The Weakerthans," singer John K. Samson said yesterday in a brief official statement. "We wish him well, and are continuing without him."

The crtitically acclaimed Winnipeg band, which has recorded three albums and earned two Juno nominations since its inception in 1997 is now comprised of Samson, drummer Jason Tait, and guitarist Stephen Carroll.

Samson would not say why Sutton is no longer in the band or whether anyone would replace him.

US Shows and Toronto too:

F the system. We are going on the road. See shows page for our latest dates.

Video with music: The Weakerthans, along with our visual collaborators - Simon and Caelum (directors of all our previous video) - shot a music video for the song Our Retired Explorer Dines with Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961.

We spent a day carousing on frozen Lake Winnipeg in March. Speeding across slushy ice in a 1950's Auto-neige (aka bombadier) on snowmobiles and on dog sleds (for real!) in period appropriate explorer costumes. (Really, does anything sound more fun?) The video features an animatronic penguin, John K as an 80 year old man, JPS as Michel Foucault, a recreation of Richard Bird's Antarctic hut where he spent 6 months and well lots of beautiful footage of frozen Lake Winnipeg. Video will begin airing sometime in the Future, start requesting it now.

Weakerthans in Europe (3 Countries, 3 Shows):

Special Summer Offer -- Weakerthans play 3 European dates in late July (hang tough for full details).

August 26th, 2003:
Our new album Reconstruction Site will be released on August 26th, 2003.

...And A New Alliance Is Made: The Weakerthans Sign to Epitaph Records

Late last night at a pay phone on the Trans-Canada highway outside Wawa...
Blowing snow, semi-trucks charging past in the background.

"Hey!"

"Oh Hi, What's up?"

"We just signed to Epitaph Records. They are going to release our next album in North America."

"Hey, Cool! Are you excited?"

"Yah."

"When is it coming out?"

"Hopefully, like, late this summer."

"Excellent. What's it called?"

"I think it's going to be called 'Reconstruction Site'."

"Nice."

"Yeah it is all really really good. Epitaph is truely a great label. We've be admiring them from a distance for a while now... (like our whole lives - you should have heard the version of Voice of God is Government - the Bad Religion song - me and John K's 1st band did. We were 17, need I say more?)

It's like we grew up together... us and the label... You know... Punk-rockers with a political conscience, who fell in love with all sorts of other music along the way.

I really feel that they make sense of us as band. ... ...We are still working on details regarding Europe, but should know for sure what we are doing there real soon."

"So is everything still cool with G7 and Sub City?"

"Oh yah. Man - they both are solid labels to be on... And you know ..we wouldn't be the band we are if it were not for all their work on our behalf... oh,... hey I got to go, the guys are all in the van."

Sporadic Concerts - Is There Any Logic? Answer: No.
Hamilton, ON - Is it really there? Answer: Yes.

The Weakerthans to play Steel Town. After years of denying it's existence, The Weakerthans have conceded that the town of Hamilton, Ontario does in fact exist. To celebrate this change in geographic status they will play their first concet ever in said city.

Weakerthans have issued this statement on the "Hamilton there/not there" issue:

"We were wrong, what can we say,...like... we'd heard about the place, but our road atlas had a section of Ontario missing... and I guess... we just assumed it was still wild frontier land down there. Listen, we don't want to focus on the errors of past routings, the shows are happening and listen man, it's gonna rock."

See shows page for further details.
