Chapter 18

(written by Michelle)

Jess awoke to the sun shining in her eyes and the birds chirping cheerily outside her window, no doubt from the scene she had witnessed last night. She ignored the pounding in her head as she shuffled around her room tidying it up from the night before. She knew she had gotten drunk, extremely drunk for that matter, but that was about all she could remember. She silently prayed that nothing had happened between her and Brian that couldn't be fixed. Jess threw her dirty clothes in the hamper and walked down the hall to check on the sleeping Scott. Jade and Jess had discussed the fact that he was smart enough to have figured out that Kevin was his father the first day he had talked to him.

Jess touched her stomach and wandered what it would have been like if Scott was hers. Not just hers, but Brian's as well. She imagined just like she had a thousand times before. A beautiful house, lots of toys, and a loving family; everything she had ever wanted. She knew that Brian would take care of them and erase all of their worries. "Aunt Jessie?" Scott questioned her, breaking her beautiful thoughts of a better life.

"Yes sweetie," she said, taking a seat next to his small body on the bed. "Do you have to work today?" he questioned, the sleepy bugs still tugging at the corners of his eyes. Jess glanced quickly to the clock, it read 7 a.m. The panick quickly disappeared from her mind. "Yes Scott, I do," she answered the toddler, tucking him back in so he would sleep for another 2 hours. "C-ya later," he whispered before being ripped back into his dreamland.

"Bye," Jess said before scooting off to the bathroom for a quick shower and some Tylenol. "Good Morning Jessie-Pooh!!" Jade called as she entered her own room. Jess nodded in her best friend's direction. Knowing the reason why Jade was so happy this morning made her friend a little less scared of the good mood.

Forty-five minutes, a clean shower, and some clean clothes later, Jess headed out the front door for a full day of work. Today was the day all the Magic players got their physicals, so it meant a 12 hour day for Jess. She hopped into her Jeep Cherokee, a present she bought herself last week, and headed down the freeway to work. At the turn to the exit however, she thought she saw Brian's Beemer heading back toward her house. "Shake it off Jess, he's taken remember?" she scolded herself, picturing Leighanne's perfect face in front of her own. She swatted at thin air as if trying to get the picture away from her and turned onto the freeway.

Jade putted around the house, cleaing up the mess Scott and the sitter had left from the night before when the doorbell rang. Still with her hair in a messy bun and the vacumn cleaner in hand, Jade answered the door. "Hi, Jade. Busy?" Brian asked, hands in his pockets and looking a little uncomfortable. "Not really, but Jess isn't here," she told him, pushing a piece of stray hair away with her free hand. "I'm not here to see Jess," he said, brushing past her to make his way to the living room. "C'mon in," Jade said, a little taken back by Brian's outburst of rudeness. She wandered in the living room to find that he had already taken a seat on the big comfy chair; Jess's favorite.

"What can I do for you Brian?" Jade asked, eager to get to his intentions before her son woke up. "Well this isn't a social call," he ignored the shock look he got from Jade and continued, "I need to talk about Jess." A genuine look of shock now registered on Jade's face, "What about Jess?" she asked. "I think I'm still in love with her," he replied.

Jess said goodnight to her boss and pulled her hair from it's ponytail as she headed out to her car. She was completely exhausted and the fact that she was still hungover didn't seem to help any. All she wanted to do was to get home and take a nice hot shower, relax, and then go to bed. But it would probably be another late call tonight, there was still a huge stack of paperwork she had to get to before tomorrow. As she entered the traffic on the freeway her car phone rang, "Hello?" she answered, focusing on the pick-up in front of her. "It's me, we need to talk," Jade spoke into the phone.
