The Real Story of Brian's Infection

How It All Began
When Brian was five years old, he was riding his scooter with his mom when he hit the curb and grazed his knee. He was just fine with only a few cuts and bruises, but two weeks later, Brian and his brother Harold were playing outside their grandfather's house. Harold was riding his bike at top speed when Brian slipped in his path. He couldn't steer away and accidently ran over his brother's stomach.

His parents were worried he might have fractured his scull because he had hit his head so badly. They were all happy when the x-rays showed no fractures, but other tests revealed some shattering news: Brian had a tiny hole in his heart and was suffering from a rare and life-threatening blood infection.

The defect in the bottom of his heart had been with Brian all his life but was not serious. The infection, however, which originated from the first accident, had spread dramatically through his bloodstream and doctors feared it would kill him. Brian explains: "The infection was so bad that the doctors had no way of getting it under control. My parents were told that it was a very rare condition and few people ever survived. Because I was so little, the chances were even worse. The doctors basically gave me a zero per cent chance of living."

"I didn't really know what was going on because I was so young. One minute I had been running around having fun, the next I was in the hospital having all kinds of treatment. I was terrified."

I am happy to announce that Brian has fully recovered from his surgery, and he will join the rest of the BSB on July 8th to kick off their summer North American tour!
