In 1997 Alex joined K & B Motorsports, racing go-karts. At the age of 10 he ran in the Microstock class at Greenwood Valley, being the youngest driver in his class. His best feature finish was 4th, and finished 6th in the standing for the season. Also in "97" Hamlin Speedway opened, where he ran half a season, accomplishing a feature win.

In the "98" season he moved up a class to Microstock Sportsman at Hamlin speedawy. During that season, he had 2 feature wins and 5th place in the points.

1999 he moved up to Microstock JR Stock at Hamlin, with 2 feature wins and a 4th place in the points and 2 feature wins at Borgers Speedway.

2000 was a spetacular season for Alex running three tracks and an asphalt track too! During this year he had 4 feature wins at Hamlin and 3rd in the points, 6 feature wins at Pocono MT Speedway and a Championship, where his competors were two to three times his age, 9 feature wins and a Championship at Snydersville, and 1 feature win at Borgers.
