I was born in Lucas, KS, after the Wright Brothers made the first successful airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., and before the 16th Amendment (income tax) and World War I. We lived next door to Samuel Dinsmoor when he was building the Garden of Eden. Dinsmoor often scolded my sister,Vida & I for playing around his construction project. One incident I will never forget was without us knowing it, he threw a corset in the fishing pond and pointed at it and said, "This is all that is left of a woman who fell into the pond!" That certainly made a believer out of me to not play around his place again!
I was a clerk, a restaurant owner and a cook for the Lucas school, K-18 Cafe in Lucas, and a Girls Scout Camp in Colorado Springs, CO, before we moved to Hays where I cooked & cashiered at FHSU Memorial Union and Hadley Hospital (now part of Hays Medical Center).
I married Randall in 1924 & we had one son, Jarold. Randall died in 1973. |
Jarold lives in Arvada, Colorado with his wife, Mary. |

In 1995, with Jim's encouragement, I agreed to be a "guinea pig" for a telemedicine grant. Then I was asked to do a teleconference in January, 1997. I wondered how I get myself into such a mess because it really bothers me & makes me so nervous. Some of the information was reported in the Economist, Jan. 11, '97 issue.
My once in a lifetime experience recently happened on February 26, 1998. I teleconferenced with V.P. Gore. We talked about the telemedicine service plus other things. He said, "I bet you still remember having a partyline?" I replied, "Yes, that's how we kept up on the latest news." Isn't technology something else?
