Current Severe Weather Outlook
March 26, 1991
On March 26, 1991, this tornado went through the northwest corner of the city. It was around 6:30 PM CST. I didn't actually see this tornado because I was taking shelter in a friends basement. I was in the 8th grade when this tornado went through. The hardest hit community was a little place called Willowbrook. This tornado was rated an F4 with 5 injuries. We haven't had one come close to the city since then. I hope we don't have any anytime soon.
April 5, 1999
An F0 tornado hits the east side of Wichita around the Oliver and Kellogg area. These images of the tornado was caught by security cameras at Via Christi St. Joe hospital. These were the only video pics of the tornado. Sirens were sounded at 7:39 AM and the tornado warning was issued at 7:45. The following was the actual tornado warning statement.
May 4, 1999
An F1 tornado hits just outside of the community of Buhler KS just missing Buhler High School. I graduated from there back in 1995. This tornado touched down several times. I saw the wall cloud that produced this tornado.

June 9, 1999
I had some pictures left on a roll of film so I took some snapshots of some strange but awesome looking clouds.

KAKE NEWS ABC KANSAS
First Storm Alert
When severe weather breaks out in parts of Kansas, this is what comes on the screen from one of our local tv stations. KAKE-TV 10 in Wichita. Also known as ABC Kansas. These snapshots were taken on Sept. 18, 2002. A few Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and a T-Storm Watch was in effect. KAKE will show a map of the warnings, and also switch the map to a view of radar and leaves a ticker along the bottom in text form of what counties are under alerts.
This is KAKE's Precision Doppler 10 which is located on top of the television station in Wichita.

KWCH CHANNEL 12 WICHITA KANSAS
Super Doppler 12 Storm Alert
This is another way we get severe weather iformation. This is from KWCH Channel 12 in Wichita.
This is KWCH's Super Doppler 12 which is located just East of Hutchinson on East 4th right next to their televistion transmitter.

KSNW Channel 3 in Wichita has started a new program. From the KSN Weatherlab comes WeatherWarn. You can get forecasts, and warnings either emailed or paged to your pager from KSN 3. I have this service on my pager and it is cool. You should check it out. Go to www.ksn.com to find out more.
The KSN Weatherlab has moved from the KSN Studios to Exploration Place in Wichita. A new facility people can go in and find out interesting information and things including watching the KSN Weather Team in action and all of their weather forecasts you see on their news and severe weather break-ins will be from there. The KSN Weatherlab@Exploration place. The image above is a screen capture taken from the Weatherlab@Exploration place.

This is what the KSN/Via-Christi StormWarn looks like.

Now available from KSN News is High Definition Doppler. Below are two pictures of the new radar which is located just outside of Haven at the corner of K96 and Arlington RD. HD Doppler is capable of 15 times the resolution of NEXRAD Doppler in normal operations mode, up to 10 times the resolution of the radar at KWCH-TV and 50 times the accuracy of the system at KAKE-TV. KSN's High Definition Doppler is 40% more powerful than the radar used at KWCH-TV and 1,400 times more powerful than the radar used by KAKE-TV. In addition, KSN's High Definition Doppler is six times faster than competing radar, updating images every 10 seconds.

Starting in 2001, UPN Kansas and FOX Kansas started using a severe weather alert map. Both stations use the same map.
This is from The Weather Channel. Those who have cable television recognize this crawl. Those with satellite like Dish Network or Direct TV do not get this type of info.

This is a new weather radio that radio shack has come out with. It has this new technology called SAME. Specific Area Message Encoding. You can program this weather radio to go off for specific counties rather than all of the counties covered by that weather radio station. When a alert is detected, it will flash the type of alert. If it is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, it will flash SEVERE THUNDER WARNING and if it was a tornado warning, it will flash TORNADO WARNING along with a Red light under Warning.
