SEDGWICK COUNTY SHERIFF'S EXPLORERS

***********THIS SITE UNDER CONSTRUCION**************

"America's hope for the future lies in the youth of today." This philosophy led the Boy Scouts of America to develop its Explorer Division for career-oriented young adults, aged 14 through 21. Members are referred to as "Explorer" and, while the program is part of the BSA, the Explorer program is distinctively different from scouting. Explorers is a co-educational, young-adult program developed and surpervised by local community organizations, businesses and individuals providing an opportunity for young adults to explore a particular career field.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Cadets are a voluntary post organized under the Explorer program, Boy Scouts of America, sponsored by the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department, under the direction of the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Reserves. It serves the public without compensation in the interest of good law enforcement and in cooperation with all law enforcement agencies. The Sheriff and/or Colonel of the Sedgwick County Sheriff Reserves may call upon this post to perform various duties at his/her direction at any time, day or night, to give assistance to the citizens of Sedgwick County and perform emergency service if the need arises.

What is an Explorer?

Explorers are young adults who have the opportunity to assist and train with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office. Explorers can broaden their understanding and first-hand knowledge of the challenges and job skills that make up their community's police service. In addition to gaining a working knowledge of police work, the participants have the opportunity to give of themselves to their communtiy. Although Post 880 is law enforcement oriented, Explorers are volunteers and do not serve as police employees, sworn or civilian.

What does an Explorer do?

As an Explorer, young adults do a wide variety of activities which are related to law enforcement in most aspects. Some of the activities include:

Community Service-

Explorers serve the community in various ways such as directing traffic at special events, crime prevention programs and various security details.

Ride-a-longs-

Once an Explorer becomes eligible, they can participate in the ride-a-long program. They become an extra set of eyes and ears for the officers and assist them on various calls. Explorers may only become eligible after being in the unit for 90 days and have passed the road test. Explorers may ride either 1st or 2nd shift. Explorers may not ride at the same time while a special assignment is taking place.
