DOMESTIC VIOLENCE...THE FACTS

Domestic Violence is one of the most common of all crimes

* Acts of domestic violence occur every 15 seconds in the U.S.
* About 50% of all couples experience at least one violent incident in their relationship.
* Approximately 25% of these couples experience violence regularly.
* Almost twice as many people (34%) have witnessed incidents of domestic violence ans have witnesses robberies and muggings combined (19%)
* 20% of all murders in the country are committed within the family, and 13% are committed by spouses.

Most family violence is committed against women

* 95% of domestic violence incidents are perpetrated by men.
* At least 33% of all visits to the emergency room are caused by battering.
* At least 25% of domestic violence victilms are pregnant when beaten.
* Every year, an estimated 2-4 million women of all races and classes are battered by a spouse or intimate partner in the U.S. alone. 4,000 woman are killed.
* Domestic violence results in more serious injuries to women that muggings, automobile crashes ans rapes combined.
* 1-4 female suicides were victims of family violence.

Domestic violence takes its toll on the family, society, and the future:

* Victims of domestic violence are three times more likely to be victimized again that are victims of other types of crimes.
* Children are emotionally traumatized by witnessing family violence: Many of them grow up to repeat the pattern as victim or abuser.
* Children frequently become accidental victims when they attempt to stop a fight or progect their mothers.
