Australian Sites, Sights and Tourist Attractions

Going to Australia for the 2000 Summer Games? Well, here are some touristy things you can do before or after you've used up your tickets. These are places we have been and enjoyed. Most are a few hours (driving) from Sydney. Some require LONG plane trips. If you have any questions, e-mail us, we'll be glad to help, if we can.

Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains This is truly a fun time but requires some stamina as all cave tours must be walked and there is a lot of up and down
3 Sisters at Katoomba The 3 sisters are a rock formation. They are located on what I would call the Australian Grand Canyon. Lots of trails. Very beautiful. The 'yellow' spot on the pictures is where we spotted rock climbers spending the night!
Dunk Island in the Great Barrier Reef This is a great vacation all by itself! It is fairly expensive, even though Dunk is one of the least expensive islands. This site lists some of the prices. Some activities are free, but not all are. Scuba diving is expensive, but fun. A catamaran is free, plus a lesson on sailing. The water is blood warm and clear.
Aboriginal Rock Art Kakadu is a very large area. It is beautiful and an extremely interesting place. The picture is of aboriginal art rock paintings, xray style. These pictures are meant to be similar to text/story books. There is a wet and dry season and they mean it. Crocodile Dundee was filmed in this area in the dry season. We were there in the wet season. I would recommend, I think, the dry. But we did have a good time.
Old Sydney Town Old Sydney Town is sort of like a Williamsburg, Va or some Cowtown in the West. It will give you a great idea of how Australia was in the 1700's. Plus it has a native Australian animal zoo and you can pet kangaroos and the like. Plus some koalas you can get fairly close to. Koalas don't like people much.

Here is a link to several Australian online newspapers. This is a good way to see what's happenin' in the land down under Australian Newspapers

Thinkin' 'bout driving in Oz? Think long and hard about that: The roads are not U.S. size. They are good roads, but more like boulavards that we know. And, of course, they drive on the left . We were lucky as my father-in-law was kind enough to drive us nearly everywhere.
Public transportation is very good, and even the tourist attractions have either trains or tour buses to them. Cab stands are everywhere you need them.
So my advice is DON'T drive. One big reason The Roundabout

Don't be fooled by the BIG roundabout and the small cars in the web site. The roundabouts are small , the speed fast and the decisions have to be made very quickly. If you're still trying to figure out which side of the ROAD your supposed to be on....well you can see that it could get pretty hairy, quickly.
