CD Review- Boys on The Side soundtrack

I saw the film on video a while ago and the other day I accidentaly found this soundtrack at a local store. I purchased it mainly because my favorite female performers are present in the album, and also because it is a great one.

The album opens and closes with Bonnie Raitt's version of Roy Orbison's "You Got It". Bonnie didn't change much from the original, basically adding a solo to it. Anyway, it sounds very powerful in her voice. It is followed by Melissa Etheridge, in her poignant "I Take You With Me", which captures the spirit of the film very well.

Sheryl Crow is not in her best moments in this album. She covers Eric Clapton's "Keep On Growing" without much spitrit to it, but the arrangement is great. I've never heard the original, but knowing E.C.'s style I believe she made a decent enough version. Her best moment in the soundtrack is as writer of the great "Somebody to Stand By Me", which was recorded brilliantly by Stevie Nicks. Both Sheryl and Stevie later collaborated in the soundtrack of "Practical Magic". Seemingly, they enjoyed it.

Other great moments are Sarah McLachlan's "Ol'55", very inspiring tune, Jonell Mosser's cover for Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", and Whoopi Goldberg's tearful rendition of "You Got It", which is featured in the most emotional part of the film.

As most soundtracks, this one also has duds: Indigo Girls sound tuneless and Annie Lennox's "Why" sounds misplaced in this CD.

Bottom line: A good CD, if you skip a few tracks.
