The summer of 1971 they were offering swim lessons at the Loyal Hights play field which was just a block from our house. I wanted the lessons Mom & Dad agreed, they decided we could walk since it was so closem as we left the house our neighbors were leaving there house to take the childres to swim lessons and they were driving them. I remember us talking about how silly it was to deive when it was that close.
After the lessons we decided to walk home through the park instead of around it on the paved walkway, the park has a steep hill to go down to the lower playfield as we were walking down the hill Mom slipped and broke her leg, a compond fracture of both bones.
mom could do nothing she was in a full leg cast, I grew up very quickly that summer, the household duties fell on my sholders at 9 years of age I was doing the cooking, cleaning, laundry and the other duties that come with a house running smoothly.
At the time I felt the responsible for my Mothers injuries & taking over these duties was my way of saying just how sorry I was. Why did I want to learn to swim?
