Needless to say, Pooch Patrols aren't on a schedule for obvious reasons.
Some may cover a mile or two and patrol once or twice every day. Others
cover a block or two when time permits.
The "pooches" do some of our very best public relations work by breaking
the ice with kids. All too often, kids "at risk" really don't have much
use for adults in general and the Oakland Neighborhood Watch Patrol in
particular. Even so, they tend to at least tolerate "us" to get close to
our dogs. If it works, we will use it.
Many of our local children don't know and couldn't care less about our
name. They certainly know the dogs by name! If they see us out alone, they
ask about the dogs. Well, at least they are talking to us.
The Pooch Patrol is NOT a new concept but it is a new GROUP effort. We
aren't sure what all we can do with this group but we are working on ideas.
If YOU have suggestions, please let us hear from you at onw717@hotmail.com
Most dogs usually have pretty keen senses of smell and hearing. This may be
helpful when we start getting more warm weather calls to search for missing
children and pets. We have already discovered their ability to hear barking
dogs and sirens before we do.
As additional ideas are suggested and worked through, they will appear on
this page. These pages are intended to be an exchange of ideas.
The worst suggestion in the world is the one not offered.
Topeka has a law stating that all dogs must have a license. Shot records
must be current to apply for the tag. We support the law for the sake of
safety as well as liability.
