My Grandfather

My grandfather and I were very close. He called me his 'little princess'. I adored him and thought he would always be in my life. When I was about 7 years old, my grandfather passed away. One night my mom and step-dad dropped my brothers and I off at our aunt's house. They were going to see my grandfather at the hospital. He had had a heart attack and the doctors said it didn't look good. We didn't know the real reason why we were dropped off.

My brothers were excited to get to spend the night with our cousins, but something just didn't feel right to me. I went to sleep that night and I had a dream. It was the most vivid one I have ever had in my entire life.

In the dream I saw my grandfather. He had somewhat of a sad look on his face at first, but then he gave me a big smile. He asked me to come sit on his knee so he could talk to me. He told me that he was going to be leaving and this was the only way he would get to say goodbye. I started crying because I didn't know why he had to leave. Grandpa looked at me and told me not to worry, because he would always be close to me and if I ever needed him to just think of him and he would be there for me. He told me he would watch over me and that I needed to remember that no matter how bad things got he was beside me. We sat and talked for a while and he made me laugh. Grandpa kissed my forehead and told me that he had to go. He said he wanted me to be strong no matter what. And then he left.

I woke up and it was a while before I got to sleep again. The next thing I know, my mother is shaking me awake saying she needed to talk to me. I looked at her and said, "Grandpa is gone isn't he?" My mom just sat there with a puzzled look on her face for a minute then she answered yes.

I have carried that memory with me for quite a while now. Anytime that I felt alone or afraid I thought of my grandpa and that one last night that I was able to talk to him.
