Diana is the Roman counterpart of the Greek Goddess Artemis. She is the twin sister of Apollo, the sun God, and daughter of Jupiter and Latona. Beech trees are sacred to her. She is a huntress, but also is a nurturer of children, feminine values, and protector of the weak and vulnerable. She is the Goddess of the Moon shooting silver arrows of moonbeams toward the earth. She is free-spirited and independent, a maverick and huntress free in the chase. Roman poet, Horace (1st century b.c.) called Diana the patron Goddess of Witchcraft. The 19th chapter of Acts, in the Bible, mentions the "Great Temple of Diana" (one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world) in Ephesus and that the "Great Goddess Diana" was worshipped by the whole (known) world. Diana was considered a healer and a bringer of disease. Images have shown her has a plague bringer. Women would pledge so many years in service of her as virgins, after which they married and had children. In their childbirth process they could call on Diana's assistance during their birthing. Wearing bearclaws during labor, is a talisman of Diana... and is said to ease the pain. There are images of Diana holding a stag in one hand and a wolf in another.. showing her in control of the cycles of life and nature.
Prior to Greek influence of Artemis, Diana was a goddess of the forest, the cycle of life in animals in birth and hunt, as well as a goddess of streams. She was also consider the goddess of the Night... later adopting lunar when associated with Artemis. In Italy sacred places of Diana were groves.
"Let us chant Diana's praise, O women!
