Cerridwen gave birth to two childrem. One was a daughter, Creidwy, who was beautiful while the other was a son, Afagdu, was ugly and disfigured. In her pity for her son she concocted a magickal potion to inspire his brilliance. In her cauldon she brewed a potion of six herbs for a year and a day. She left a boy named Gwion in charge of it. One day as he was stirring the brew, drops splashed on this fingers and he licked them off. He was gifted with insight of everything in the world, past and present. He knew she would be angry at him. He ran away and Cerridwen chased him. Gwion changed into a rabbit, Cerridwen chased him as a greyhound. He changed into a fish, Cerridwen chased him as an otter. He became a bird, she became a hawk. In one final act of desperation he changed himself into a grain of corn, while Cerridwen changed into a chicken, and ate him.
When Cerridwen resumed her human form, she was pregnate with Gwion. Nine months later she gave birth to a son. In disgust, she threw the baby into a river. He was rescued by a Prince, and grew into the great Celtic bard, Taliesin.
