Kuala LumpurTraffic Should be Improved
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP national Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on 10 August 1999.

Dr Tan led a group of residents from Jalan Ambong 4, Kepong Baru, to meet the Deputy Director of City Transport Department, Ir Raymond Chiew and Senior Traffic Engineer Ir Sabudin Mohd Salleh to discuss, among other things, the new traffic system in Kepong Baru, Kuala Lumpur.

Recently, KLCH has spent RM100,000 to improve several roads in Kepong Baru such as Jalan Ambong and Jalan Ambong 4. The one-way traffic system has annoyed over 20 families along Jalan Ambong 4 because of the noise and dirt.

The residents have proposed (1) reversing the direction of traffic flow along Jalan Ambong, (2) converting the titles of the residential houses to commercial status and (3) the issuing of stickers for parking along Jalan Ambong 4.

KLCH should consider these carefully.

The increase in the number of vehicles going through KL is astounding: millions are milling through the city daily. Congestion is inevitable. Hence, this year KLCH allocates nearly RM300 million to deal with traffic and public transport.

The most congested sites include Kepong Road, Cheras Road, Tun Razak Road, Ampang Road, the Bank Negara Roundabout, Pudu Road, and Puduraya Roundabout. The replacement of the Puduraya Roundablout with traffic lights may be helpful.

Traffic police plays an important part, enhancing the KLCH computer system and traffic dispersal projects. Truly, the KL Traffic Dispersal Committee should study the ways to control the number of vehicles entering KL.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
