Let US Have Details On The Continuation Of The Bakun Project, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the continuation of the Bakun project on 9 June 1999.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad reiterated the Government's intention to go ahead with the Bakun project in Sarawak but on a smaller scale, with Tenaga Nasional Berhad taking the leading role.

Last month, we debated the supplementary supply bill in the Dewan Rakyat where compensation to the previous concessionaire Bakun Hydro Corporation (Ekran Sdn Bhd) and other details were debated. The Government said that it would continue with a smaller project.

The Prime Minister has come out with it again but with even less information. This is not good enough for the people.

Before the economic crisis in July 1997, the multibillion Bakun project was to supply the Peninsula through long undersea cable. After the crisis, the

project was put on hold. Part of the jungle has been logged and a diversion tunnel has to be completed.

Sarawak has a surplus of power that can be supplied to Sabah and Brunei. There must be good reasons to build more hydroelectric dams such as Bakun. Does the country require the extra energy? If so, how much and in what period?

There are so many unanswered questions such as how much compensation to the Bakun Hydro Corporation? How much logging has been done? How much has been spent on the diversion tunnel? What happen to people affected? What is the cost of the smaller dam? Where will the excess power go? Will it affect the environment?

We hope that the Government will answer these questions with transparency and accountability.
