Professionalism In All Cases of Public Prosecution In Malaysia Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the reminder by the Attorney-General that all deputy public prosecutors must not be afraid of political pressure on 31 May 1999.   | |||||||
| Yesterday, The Attorney General Tan Sri Mokhtar Abdullah reminded 300 deputy public prosecutors not to fear political pressure and to be professional as well as non-aligned. He said:" Our responsibility is to enforce strictly the laws of the nation, prosecute without fear or favour, all clearly based on evidence." As the chief legal officer of the government as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, we always feel that the Attorney General should show consummate professionalism, acting without fear or favour. Since Tan Sri Mokhtar emphasizes the importance of professionalism and non-alignment to political parties, we believe that he should review thoroughly all cases especially those that have taken place since he has assumed |
the office. Why are some cases causing furore among the public? True, there are always people who are unhappy with certain cases. The Attorney General must be able to show the majority that all cases are based on evidence, handled with professionalism without bending to pressure from anybody. The cases of Anwar and Guan Eng have resulted in disquiet. Many would dispute the type of justice meted out to these two and others. Tan Sri Mokhtar would have to look into these professionally. He must finds ways and means to dispel the disquiet. We should try to seek the truth. All things that can be based on facts, figures or evidence must be presented accordingly, taking into consideration the multiracial nature of the society. Dr Tan Seng Giaw | ||||||
