Step up immediate remedial works on the Bukit Antarabangsa, Ampang jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Press Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the plight of residents at the Bukit Antarabangsa which has been hit by the landslides and heavy rains has hampered remedial works on 20 May 1999.   | |||||||
| Hundreds of condominium dwellers who have moved out to hotels and other temporary residence are hoping that the Government muster more resources to stabilise the affected areas, so that they can return to their homes as soon as possible. Heavy rains have wreaked havocs all over the country, causing landslides and flooding in some areas. These have made remedial efforts very diffcult at Bukit Antarabangsa. Even the temporary headquarters for remedial workers were flooded. Meanwhile, residents are not allowed back to the affected areas such as the Athenaeum at the Peak condominiums. Whether Ampang Jaya Municipal Council has issued temporary or permanent certificate of fitness to the developer Superhomes Development Sdn Bhd |
does not help the victims. The superhomes have become superdisasters. Since the 1993 Highland Towers tragedy claiming 48 lives, projects in nearby areas such as Bukit Antarabangsa continue as though nothing has happened. Once the memory about the tragedy fades, the people in charge go back to the old habit. This old habit has not tackled the conundrum of the lack of environmental impact assessment, EIA, the approval of projects especially hillside ones without concern about the implications and the weaknesses in supervision of all projects. How many more tragedies will Malaysians have to face during rainy seasons? We have to get to the bottom of the Bukit Antarabangsa landslides and other projects all over the country.
