Landlides at Bukit Antarabangsa, Hulu Klang, Selangor, Malaysia.
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the several landslides at the Bukit Antarabangsa, Ulu Klang, Selangor on 16 May 1999.

The day before yesterday, there were a series of landslides at Bukit Antartabangsa, not far from the Highland Towers disaster in 1993. These block access roads to about seven housing estates, affecting about 10,000 people. About 1,000 residents have been evacuated.

Hillside landslides occur continually. A few months ago, similar incident happened in Penang. In the last few years, landslips killed many at Genting Highlands, Pahang, Pos Dipang, Perak, and Ulu Klang, Selangor. The Highland Towers disaster that killed 48 people has left an indelible memory.

The present event reminds us once again about the importance of developmental planning, approval and the management of the environment. The coordination between the Federal, State and Local Governments has created doubts on the

methods of environmental impact assessment. Do they have enough experts?

Clearly, the functions of the local governments must be improved especially those on the approval and supervision of hillside projects. Do we know how many hillside projects approved without adequate assessment of the environment?

We propose that the Government take immediate steps to help the victims. Then, it should find out the true causes of the disaster.

If we travel along the major roads in the country, we find that many hills in towns and cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Kajang, Ipoh, Taiping and Penang are bald. These are visible to the naked eyes. There are many environmentally destructive things that are invisible. The Government has to pay great attention to these things.
