Federal Territory (Kuala Lumpur) DAP is gearing for the coming general elections. Deny the Barisan Nasional Government the two-third majority.   | |||||||
| The initial preparations of the Federal Territory DAP Committee for the coming general elections presented at the FT DAP meeting on 9 May 1999 at the Federal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The 1999 political situation is very different from that of 1995. In 1995, the Barisan Nasional rode high on the favourable economic atmosphere, resulting in the debacle of DAP in the general elections. This year, after 22 months of economic crisis, epidemic of viral encephalitis, Lim Guan Eng and Anwar incidents and other factors, Malaysians of all races are in a state of shock. The internal confusion of UMNO shows that the situation is complicated. Since 2 April 1999, the response to the voters' registration campaign has been overwhelming, so much so that the Election Commission has printed more forms and extended the period from 2 to 13 May 1999. The flood of new voters is a new factor in the coming elections. Although elections may not be within this year, every political party is concerned with the trend of the voters. The formation of Parti Keadilan Nasional is also a new political factor. The president of the party, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah, Anwar's wife, attracts attention. In the coming elections, every opposition party has a part to play. DAP's objective is to deny the Barisan Nasional the two-third majority. To achieve this objective, DAP is willing to cooperate with other opposition parties on major issues such as the eradication of corruption, the stamping out of nepotism and cronyism as well as the maintenance of justice, democracy and good governance. DAP opposes the formation of the Islamic State and it is more transparent on the above-stated cooperation. Although the political situation is better |
for the Opposition than that of 1995, constituencies such as Bukit Bintang and Seputih may see candidates from DAP, MCA and a new party. We have to try our best to prevent the splitting of votes which will affect DAP candidate. Constituencies contested In 1995, DAP contested Cheras, Bukit Bintang, Seputih, Segambut, Bandar Tun Razak and kepong. In the coming elections, we have to consider Batu an Wangsa Maju apart from the six constituencies. Training of election workers FT Committee is planning to conduct courses to train election workers such as polling and counting agents to ensure election work runs smoothly. These include election laws and regulations. Ceramahs After the meeting today, we shall be in close contact with all branches in order to arrange for ceramahs in the various constituencies, to spread the party messages. Raising of fund On 29 August 1999, we shall be holding a fund-raising dinner at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur, so that we can repay the debts of over RM 18,900 to the DAP headquarters. Hitherto, we have repaid RM 2,000. It is hoped that with the cooperation of everyone, the target will exceed the above sum, leaving some as election fund. Annual General Meetings, AGM. The party HQ has approved 11 branches for AGM. Up to 7 may 1999, five branches have held AGM. The rest will do so before 15 June 1999. Then, all can devote the attention to the coming elections. Publicity Materials Besides materials from the HQ, we shall be preparing leaflets on economic crisis, viral epidemic, problems of City Hall administration, flash floods and so forth. This will depend on the above-mentioned election fund. FT DAP Committee FT DAP Committee (Chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw) | ||||||
