The Extension of the Period for Voters' Registration Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the extension of the period of campaign for voter's registration on 30 April 1999.   | |||||||
| Since the 2 April 1999, the campaign to register voters has been well received. As more people register, there are not enough forms. The extension of the period of campaign to 13 may 1999 is logical. We hope the public will make full use of this period. There are tens of thousands of Malaysian overseas either as diplomats, students, businessmen or employees of corporations. Some have still not registered as voters. But the attention paid by the Election Commission is not good enough. Apparently, the Commission has sent some forms to overseas consulates to enable Malaysians to register as voters. It should follow up on what actually happens to this campaign overseas. For example, a person in Washington, the West Coast of United States of America, complains that he has difficulty trying |
to register. He has contacted the consulates in the East Coast and has been told that he should contact those in the West Coast. The consulate in Los Angeles in the West Coast has told him that the voters' registration has been closed last year, the current one is only for those who are in Malaysia. Despite contacts with the Election Commission in Kuala Lumpur, he is still waiting for the ways to get himself registered. We hope that the Chairman Dato' Harun Din investigates the complaint and the difficulties faced by Malaysians outside Malaysia, so that Malaysians who wish to register can do so. It is true that there are far more eligible citizens in Malaysia compared with those overseas. Even then, the Commission should attempt to make life easier for those outside the country.
