The Voters' Registration Campaign 1999
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the need to extend the period of the voters' registration on 29 April 1999.

Since the current campaign from 2 April 1999, the response from those reaching the age of 21 by 1 April 1999 has been overwhelming, so much so that some Election Commission offices have run out of forms. One factor for the good response may be the coming general elections will be within a year.

If Dato' Harun Din extends the period of registration, more forms can be printed to enable more people to register as voters.

On 2 April 1999, the Chairman said that there were 1.2 million people eligible to register

as voters. The percentage of registration of new voters is about 30 to 40%. After 27 days, we do not know whether the number registered is over 400,000.

In a parliamentary democracy, general elections once every five years are important. The more citizens register as voters, the more people will turn up to vote, making general elections more meaningful.

We hope that the Election Commission will be able to extend the period of the campaign to register voters to give eligible citizens opportunity to do so.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
