The Part Played by the Health Minister and his Deputy During the Viral Epidemic Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on Deputy Health Minister Dato' Wira Ali Rustam asking where Opposition Parties' doctors were during the height of the viral encephalitis, VE, outbreak on 20 April 1999.   | |||||||
| We do not know whether the height of the VE outbreak is over. As long as the nature, character, reservoir and mode of transmission of the virus is not clearly determined, there is the possibility of further outbreaks. Since the beginning of the epidemic, DAP has been watching the development very closely, visiting the affected areas in particular Bukit Pelanduk frequently to understand the situation. In March 1999, during the Sabah election, Opposition Leader Sdr Lim Kit Siang even invited Dato' Chua Jui Meng to go to Bukit Pelanduk so that together we could help solve the epidemic. But, Dato' Chua chose to go to Sabah. The day before yesterday, Dato' Wira Ali |
Rustam asked opposition parties, especially DAP and PAS, why they did not ask their members who were doctors to help at the height of the 'JE' outbreak. The DAP doctors were at the places where there were serious outbreaks. We have tried to understand the important things such as the number of people affected, the number of deaths, the type of virus, the sick pigs and other warm-blooded animals, the fogging of mosquitoes, the vaccination and the compensation of the farmers. Now, can he tell the nature, character, mode of transmission and reservoir of the virus? How has his ministry dealt with the viral contacts including the warm-blooded animals?
