Effective monotoring of development projects at squatter areas.
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the allocation of RM3.5 billion for the eradication of all squatter areas in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur by 2005 as announced by the Prime Minister.

On 22 April 1999, the Prime Minister presented the Mid-term Review of the 7MP in the Dewan Rakyat, proposing six strategies to make Malaysia a developed country by the year 2020. These strategies include raising the quality of life of the people.

To improve the quality of life in KL, the Prime Minister has allocated RM3.5 billion to develop KL squatter areas. At first, these areas would be cleaned up by the year 2000. Now, it has been revised to 2005. There are 42,000 squatter families.

The City Hall and private companies have various plans for the squatter areas. For example, there is a joint venture between City Hall and Magna Prima to develop Metro Prima new township at the 7th Mile Kepong. Similarly, City Hall is cooperating with

Fadason Holdings to build a new township at the Jinjang North Squatter area.

Because of the economic crisis, Metro Prima is moving at a snail's pace, the sale of houses unsatisfactory and a small number of people in the City Hall are suspected of collecting at least RM10,000 under the table for each unit of RM25,000. There are over 100 units under the City Hall. The two development projects at the Jinjang North squatter area have been delayed.

Now, the Mid-Term Review of the 7MP has allocated RM3.5 billion. We hope that the City Hall will use this allocation wisely. The most important is to monitor the various projects effectively, cutting down all irregularities and ensuring that all 42,000 squatter families have a fair deal.
