A comprehensive of the measures to fight the viral epidemic
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the warning by Dato' Chua Jui Meng against the illegal transport of sick pigs from one state to another on 17 April 1999.

Yesterday, the Health Minister warned against the illegal transportation of pigs. This is to stop the spread of VE. On 7 January 1999, the Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan, N.S., Tan Sri Mohd Isa, said that the State Veterinary Services Department discovered that pigs from Perak were transported to N.S. Clearly, the Government has not taken drastic steps early to prevent the spread of VE through the movement of sick pigs. We wish the Action Committee members help towards these steps.

We are worried not only about the VE reservoir in pigs, but also other warm-blooded animals such as dogs, cows, bats and goats. On 16 April 1999, the Veterinary Services Department announced that blood specimens were taken

from these animals within and outside the affected areas.

The people desperately hope that the Government would identify the nature, character and mode of transmission of the virus as early as possible. Is it one or more types of viruses? From where does it or do they come?

On the other hand, we expect the Action committee to review comprehensively the nationwide measures to screen warm-blooded animals, fogging of mosquitoes, vaccination, culling of pigs and setting up of a National Centre for Disease Control and Research.

Health including epidemic is not national secret. There is no need to hide. Experts should advise on the statements issued so that they are coherent and consistent.
