Protest Against Excessive Road Toll Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the collection of toll RM1.50 for private cars along the Lebuh Raya (Highway) Damansara Puchong, LDP, starting from January, 1999. January 24, 1999   | |||||||
| Tomorrow at 2.00 PM, the four LDP toll plazas are going to start collecting tariffs from motorists. After February 16,1999, four other expressways will have their toll rate increased. These have caused a furore. The concessionaire for LDP has said that it has cost the company about RM1.4 billion to build the highway with 14 interchanges and that annual interests to the banks may be RM140 million. Even with the toll collections for the first five years, it may not make profit. The Government has signed a contract with the concessionaire. If the Government does not allow the company to collect |
toll or raise the toll rate, it has to compensate the company with public funds. Just as the reaction of people in other areas, Kepong residents are unhappy with the toll rate. They feel that the rate RM1.50 is too high and 50 sen will be more acceptable. The Government would have to lend its ears to the people. It should renegotiate with the concessionaire for a toll rate that will not be a heavy burden on the people. This morning, DAP had a protest against the excessive toll in Puchong. Tomorrow morning, it is going to stage another protest at Bukit Lanjan toll plaza.
