We call on the Malaysian Government to release the report of the investigation on the Malaysian Airlines System (MAS) fiasco that prompted it to renationalize the national carrier in 2001.

We would like to hear our national carrier, MAS, getting from red to black. We also want the details of the 2001 fiasco, ending in re-nationalization and massive debt.

The Government has said that the police is investigating a report against alleged irregularities in MAS after it has spent at least RM1.79 billion to buy 29.09% MAS shares from Tan Sri Tajuddin. It should let us know the progress or the results of the investigation.

By 2001, the national carrier had an accumulated debt estimated at RM8.5 billion. The public would like to know whether there were irregularities. Although the market value of each MAS shares was about RM3, the Government paid RM8. Why?

We like to see MAS doing well. We also look forward to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport becoming a hub, vying with Singapore Changi and Bangkok. But alas, so far KLIA is not a hub.

MAS registers a net profit of RM330.4 million in the third quarter of its financial year ending 31, March, 2003, compared with a loss of RM310.2 million in the same period last year. We hope it continues to make profits.

While waiting for MAS to do better, we would like the Government to tell us what went wrong before the re-nationalization. Who were the people pillaging MAS? What were the agencies that bled the company? How did they do it?

How long would the police need? If it is facing difficulties, do we need more powerful commission to enquire into the fiasco?

Malaysia is capable of organizing international conference such as the Non-Aligned Movement Summit attended by 116 nations. The Summit was committed to a Declaration against war. We should be concerned about international issues. Similarly, we must be sensitive to the various national problems such as the MAS re-nationalization and dengue epidemic.

Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on MAS registering a net profit in the third quarter of its financial year. 26.2.2003.
