Cabinet Shuffle and Economic Crisis
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the Cabinet shuffle announced by the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. 9 January 1999

We hope that the Deputy Prime Minister will assist towards the building and strengthening of the spirit of tolerance.

At a time when there are various speculations as to whether there will be general elections before Umno election or Umno election before general elections, the Prime Minister has chosen to shuffle the cabinet and to have general elctions before Umno election.

Now, the people are thinking of economic recovery. If the new Cabinet can bring about this recovery, it will be a good thing. Let us hope that Dato' Seri Abdullah Badawi will be able to work closely with Tun Daim and Dato' Mustapha to improve the economy.

We believe that having been re-appointed Finance Minister, Tun Daim would have to get rid of the weaknesses in our financial and economic system including favouritism. He has

to show that he is really a very efficient and clean finance minister. If we do not remove these weaknesses, foreign speculators with their huge hedge funds will be able to attack the Ringgit with ease again

The promotion of Datuk Tajol Rosli Ghazali from Deputy Home Minister to Minister in the PM's Department is a good thing as he has served as a Deputy Minister for many years. We wish him well.

According to the federal constitution, the general elections will be due April 25, 2000. In the next 15 months, not only should the Government realize the desire of the people to see the economy recovering, but also be aware of the suffering and need of the public. To solve the suffering and need of the people, the Government must review major issues such as human rights, democracy and good governance.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
