Independent Panel to probe Anwar's injuries MP for Kepong on the Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohtar Abdullah's statement that the 'police were fully responsible for the injuries to the former Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim'. 7 January 1999.   | |||||||
| Yesterday, the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that the Government would consider setting up an independent panel to investigate charges that police officers were responsible for Anwar's injuries. Tan Sri Mohtar referred to this in his statement the day before. We believe that the Prime Minister should not only consider the matter but also do it immediately. Although the police have already had a team to look into the incident, it has not completed or identified the person or persons responsible for the incident. Can junior police officers investigate their seniors? Or, will a police officer identify another officer who commits an offence of this nature? When we brought up the matter repeatedly |
in Parliament in October 1998, the Government was not forthcoming in its answer. Now the The police have always stressed the need for professionalism. They may be professional in other things. But on this particular incident, there is a lack of it. No matter how angry the police officer or officers were against Anwar, such unprofessional behaviour should not have been perpetrated? The people suspect that if this could happen to Anwar, it could have happened to anybody in the country. Let us have an independent commission to get to the truth of the incident.
