We reiterate that the Malaysian government should present a white paper on MAS so that the people can understand how the company accumulated debt and losses of RM10 billion.

The Malaysian national carrier, MAS, has accumulated debt and losses of RM10 billion. How has that happened?

We are regular customers of MAS. Hence, we are concerned about its problems. When the Malaysian Government privatized the company, we expressed anxiety. Then, Tan Sri Tajuddin bought the airline's controlling shares. Last year, when the Government used our national resources to re-nationalize MAS, we asked for a report on the company.

The most important is that Tajuddin bought the MAS shares at RM8.50 per share over three years ago. Last year, while the market price for each share was over RM3.00, the Government purchased them back at RM8.00. People within and outside this country cannot accept the way this was done.

WHITE PAPER

We understand that our economy is affected by many factors such as economic slowdown of our major trading partner, U.S.A., September 11, fluctuation of oil prices and mismanagement. Which are the main

factors? What is the effects of the alleged MAS mismanagement?

After the Government has taken over MAS, it has restructured the company. We hope that this will help the company to recover. But, we want to know what went wrong with the management until the debt and the losses accumulated to RM10 billion-an accumulated debt of RM9.2 billion and losses of RM2.5 billion.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Police Corporate Crime Division recorded statements from 11 former top executives of MAS following a report lodged on the alleged management irregularities of the airline's previous management. Deputy Commissioner Datuk Maizan Shaari, the Federal Police Commercial Crimes director, confirmed the report.

In fact, the Government should inquire into all aspects of previous
management of MAS that accumulated huge debt and losses. Then, it should present a white paper in Parliament, allocating sufficient time for members to debate on it.
